Similarly, in the film Mad Max: Fury Road, there are many times that both the men and the women are empowered, rejecting gender norms. It is the representation that neither men nor women are weaker than the other. To show this, the women in this film are seen as being more assertive and powerful than the norm. In the film, the warlord Immortan Joe keeps five beautiful women as his wives. In a world where everyone has physical deformities, these wives are flawless and he keeps them locked up. He offers them anything they desire, while expecting their obedience and silence. These women reject his ideals for them and rebel. At the beginning, Max was held captive by Joe’s men, the War Boys. Being captured and unable to escape presents him as a weak man, slightly damaging his masculine image. His emasculation is more evident when contrasted with Furiosa’s role as a hero. She is the knight in shining armor that rescues the damsels in distress. While she is capable, Max is haunted by the memory of not being able to save those from his past. Denying Max the position to be a hero shows a more realistic view of men where they may not always the protector, but can still provide help in other ways. Rather than brawn, using his brain was one of Max’s greatest assets in the survival of Furiosa and her group. He would recommend alternate routes that would aid in their success. Even so, Max shows that he is also an impressive fighter, but with Furiosa in the picture, he is not the only one. Both of them have fought each other, delivering equal hits. Showing that Max and Furiosa are both similar in physical capabilities depicts the equality in genders. In the war rig, she is the one behind the wheel leading even though usually, the man would be. In this case, it shows that it doesn't matter who is in which seat because they are portrayed as equals. Both The Matrix and Mad Max: Fury Road include characters that can be compared between the two films, such as Neo and Max, Trinity and Furiosa, or the Oracle and the Many Mothers. Mad Max is the more recent film out of the two and it definitely places woman in the spotlight for the film. Most of the characters are female and how they all handle the situation is what makes them appear so strong. At the start, the wives are sexualized and objectified but then develop into courageous women who have the ability to take part in overthrowing their tyrannical government. While The Matrix has less of a female presence, the only female roles in the film play a big part into the group’s success as well. In both films, it is noted that the main characters each embody traits that are usually linked to members of the opposite gender while maintaining their gender identity. Both Max and Neo end up appearing weak many times throughout the films in which they needed to be assisted. The women, Furiosa and Trinity, are both physically capable and take on male roles. Their appearances are also based on a more male look, such as the leather adorned by both along with their short hair.
