Stereotypes of the Bennet Sisters
Women are supposed to be shy, passive and submissive. Men are expected to be tough, aggressive, dominant and self-confident(Gender Stereotypes). In Pride and Prejudice, a book by Jane Austen, there is a married couple with five daughters and each of those daughters has their own way to showing a different stereotype within themselves. In this paper I’ll be showing that each sister shows a different type way that is affiliated by the way society is set up in the book. In the book the Bennet sisters are still unmarried and their mother is wanting them to get married as soon as possible.When a bachelor from London comes to Longbourn the Bennet sisters get excited to get to meet him at the ball. At the ball he is taken by Jane Bennet, the eldest of the five sisters. Mr.Darcy is Mr.Bingley’s friend and he isn’t taken by anyone, which makes everyone think of him as arrogant. But in a course of time he finds himself attracted to Elizabeth Bennet, the second eldest of the sister, because of her charm and intelligence. Jane’s and Mr.Bingley’s relationship continued and on her way to visit him she gets sick and Elizabeth walks all the way to the Bingley’s house to take care for her
She is probably the most different out of all of them because she isn’t a person that is very sociable with anyone. In the book she isn’t mentioned much because she 's just a minor character but when mentioned she is always doing something to keep her from socializing. “I admire the activity of your benevolence,” observed Mary, “but every impulse of feeling should be guided by reason; and, in my opinion, exertion should always be in proportion to what is required(Austen).” By this quote it shows that she is more of the kind of person that has to have a logic behind of everything before it’s done. Pride and Prejudice is a story about two married couples who do not respect each other. Mrs. Bennet business is to get her five daughter's to marry the most richest man in England. She is willing to take on any obstacles that get in her way. Mr. Bennet is a very outspoken and sardonic person. If there is anything he dislikes about mrs. Bennet or about what she is doing, he let her know. He love to criticize his wife. "I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better, for as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr. Bingley might like you the best of the party." Within this extended essay, the subject chosen to study and formulate a question from was English Literature, in particular the portrayal of women during the 19th and 20th centuries, where the following novels 'The Great Gatsby' written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' were set in and originated the basis from. The question is as follows 'How does Jane Austen and F Scott Fitzgerald portray gender inequalities in both lower and upper class relationships particularly through love and marriage within the novels 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'The Great Gatsby' from the different era's it was written in?' This particular topic was chosen reflecting the morality and social class during the two different era's and determining whether there was change in the characteristics of women as well as men and how their behaviour was depicted through the two completely different stories, as they both reflect the same ethical principles in terms of love and marriage. The two novels were chosen in particular to view their differences as well as their similarities in terms of gender inequality through love and marriage, as the different era's it was set in gives a broader view in context about how society behaved and what each author was trying to portray through their different circumstances, bringing forward a similar message in both novels.
Charlotte speaks more to the general attitude of the period, the plain desire to be married. In the same conversation Elizabeth commented, “Your plan is a good one where nothing is in the question but the desire to be well married to get a rich husband or any husband, I daresay I should adopt it” (Austen 23). Elizabeth, unlike Charlotte, does not desire to marry for the sole purpose of convenience; she refuses to settle for just any man because society tells her to do so. A rush of finery descends from the stairs as three women enter the ball. Each wears a striking gown, rustling with each step they take down different paths, deviating from the expected and taking the unexpected route to find their own bliss. The party whispers their names, silently admiring the three commanding attitudes of these nontraditional women. For the 19th century, these women express attitudes that deviate from the typical stereotype. Pride and Prejudice offers Jane Austen’s take on the traditional 19th century woman through indirect characterization, tonal elements, and heavy satire and irony to portray the idea that flawed women (in the 19th century sense) hold the key to success.
The female heroine, whose eyes most of the third person omniscient novel is seen through is Elizabeth Bennet. The reader is first acquainted with Mr. Darcy's arrogance at the Meryton Ball. Speaking of Elizabeth Bennet, he so snobbishly says that she was, " tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me" (Austen 9). His feelings of superiority to the people of the town lend Mr. Darcy to be judged as a man with a repulsive and cruel personality. The women, who had found him dashingly attractive at first glance, deemed him a man unworthy of marriage because he offered no positive qualities other than wealth. Not only did Darcy refuse to dance with Elizabeth, but he makes it clear that no woman in the room was worthy or met his standards of a suitable partner stating that, " there is not another woman in this room, whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with" (Austen 8). In the beginning of the novel, Mr. Darcy is only concerned with the wealth and social standing of the people in the town. Because of their lesser social rank, he feels they are un-deserving of his presence and refuses to communicate with them. As the novel progressed, however, Darcy became more and more accepting of the Bennet family. Pride and Prejudice is a very complex and detailed book that illustrates dramatic love stories that develop between three girls within the Bennet family. The author of Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen. Jane was born and raised in Steventon, England from 1775 through 1817; she was the youngest of seven children (Wikipedia). She was very tall, slender, outgoing, and much admired. She was proposed to many times, but she refused all of her marriage offers. She spent her short life living with her family. Jane received a typical education, and she began to write at a very young age (Introduction ?). Jane mainly composed romantic fiction, and all her books included “intense realism and biting irony”. Pride and Prejudice is romantic fiction, and it was composed in 1813 within the Romantic Era (Wikipedia). The Romantic Era was mainly focused on the individual and their relationship with nature. Considering this, Pride and Prejudice did not really fit the time era considering the characters spent most of their time indoors and only developed relationships within each other. Jane composed Pride and Prejudice as a romantic fiction because when she wrote it she was just thirty eight. She had never been married but most likely loved love. She was also a very realistic and ironic writer, and with Pride and Prejudice being this genre she brought a lot of realism and irony considering the period it was written in. Pride and Prejudice is the second book publish by Jane Austen, but it is her most popular work for many, many different obvious reasons (Wikipedia).
Analysis of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen It centers on the elder sisters of the Bennet family, Jane and Elizabeth. Their personalities, misunderstandings and the roles of pride and prejudice play a large part in the development of their individual relationships. The spirited Elizabeth and softhearted Jane have to deal with not only their own feelings but also the status of their family, both of which affect the outcomes of their marriages. The struggle is very believable and realistic because the story takes place a long time ago. Jane Austen was an acute observer of the Georgian era society that she lived in, through her observations, she began to notice many flaws, especially in the treatment of women. With her love of writing and social awareness, Austen decided to combine both together to create some of the most famous works of literature. As seen in Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice and others, Austen uses realism, an upper class voice, and an ironic tone to deliver her underlying message of feminism to the gentry of the Georgian era.
The roles of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice are contrasted between a father who cares about what’s inside of people and a mother who only worries about vanity and appearance. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s parental guidance is unique to their personalities. Because of their two opposing personas, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s ideas of marriage are contradictory for their daughters; Mr. Bennet believes in a loving respectful marriage whereas Mrs. Bennet values a marriage which concerns wealth and social status. Their aspirations for Lydia, Jane, Mary, Kitty and Elizabeth mirror their conflicting ideologies. Mr. Bennet seems to have a quiet deep love for his daughters while, on the contrary, Mrs. Bennet’s love is over-acted and conditional. Both parents help to shape their daughters’ characteristics and beliefs: Lydia reflecting Mrs. Bennet’s flighty and excessive behavior while Elizabeth inherits Mr. Bennet’s pensive and reflective temperament. Looking past their dissimilar personality traits and contradicting convictions, both parents hold the family together and play an integral role in the household structure.
An intelligent, stubborn, and free-spirited character. One that many women today connect with and see as being Jane Austen’s most feministic character. The other women in Pride and Prejudice do not like Elizabeth very much. She does not fit the social norm of that time. Being lady-like, keeping her thoughts to herself, and willing to get married as soon as she can. Elizabeth’s most admirable characteristic is her independence. Although her thoughts and views are constantly looked down upon throughout the story. This occurs because of the sick expectations and restrictions placed upon women in her society. While reading Pride and Prejudice, you cannot help but look down on every character that criticizes Elizabeth. When first picking up Pride and Prejudice, one might observe some symptoms of the theme in question; One might feel prejudiced and think, “This is that stupid Kierra Knightly love story isn’t it?” or “This is going to be so long, wordy, and boring.” just by word of ear, and perhaps a glance at the novel. Jane Austen initially wrote Pride and Prejudice as form of entertainment for her family when she was a teenager. If one thinks of this novel as one written by a young girl as a form of satire to entertain her family, it holds some pride and prejudices in a way. Mr. Bingley is often accompanied by Fitzwilliam Darcy, who is a very proud man. Elizabeth Bennet, who is proud of herself, and Mr. Darcy are not fond of one another from the start, these two characters pose the central conflict in the novel. As the novel progresses, Elizabeth receives a marriage proposal from her cousin, Mr. Collins, and turns him down. Mr. Collins then proposes to Charlotte Lucas, Elizabeth’s best friend, who accepts. Elizabeth then leaves home to stay with, the Collins’ who live near Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Darcy’s aunt.
In 1813 one of Jane Austen’s best works was published called Pride and Prejudice. Pride and Prejudice takes place in England during the early nineteenth century. Austen’s main purpose, while writing Pride and Prejudice was to convey the idea that marriage was not a business but marriage was about love. There are many prominent romance novelists out there but the one difference between them and Jane Austen is their style of writing.
