Patriarchy according to the dictionary is a social system in which males hold primary power and dominate aspects of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and property ownership. Many believe the society in which we live in today is founded on many of these same aspects. Men are in control of disproportionately large percentages of positions in politics, own more property and have more wealth. These patriarchal aspects of today’s society have shaped the ways in which men and women behave and act and have formed adverse gender roles that each gender is expected to fulfill.
