How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? The popular American Television Show from 1990-1996, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, represents the African-American community differently than the Caucasian community. “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” tells of a tale of a poor youth from West-Philadelphia who moves in with his aunt and uncle in the rich community of Bel-Air, California. The main character as described, Will Smith, learns a lot about where he is and what type of lifestyle he grew up in and how they differ. Will’s friend, “Jazz”, is from Compton, California and is often booted off the property (literally) by Will’s uncle, Phillip Banks. “Jazz” is from a rough neighborhood and his behaviors are often looked down upon …show more content…

Will was different, not only was he African American, but he also grew up in an impoverished community, a rare breed in a community filled with professional Caucasian persons. Also, the show probably wanted to show what would most likely happen if a situation like that occurred, with some exaggeration of course. Another reason is that not only were Jazz, Will, and Carlton African American, but also they were teenagers soon to become young men and that not many minorities grow up in rich communities and are as lucky or privileged as Will and Carlton. An example of this is Jazz. He was always at the Banks’ residence and was always around Will because that initial bond of their common upbringings brought them together however Will was still socially superior to him, leading their relationship to be brought apart by the parental forces of Phillip and Vivian. Phillip and Vivian were trying to civilize Will. This also happened with Huckleberry Finn and Miss Watson and Tom Sawyer. Huck didn’t want to be civilized and yes, even though Will liked the perks of having rich Family, he didn’t necessarily want to grow up and pursue a professional career to get there. Its subtle stereotypical themes throughout the series where common, providing the audience with humor, which was one of the main focuses with this series. The combination of humor and minority occupational and economic success attracted viewers, especially those caught in the cycle of racially unequal distribution of poverty. The Caucasian and African American groups were represented differently because of the racial correlations with their educational and economical norms within their communities. Although minority education and economic statistics have been looking a lot better because of the success of this television series, there are still apparent socioeconomic differences between the two race groups even to this
