Which gender is more privileged in today’s society men or women? This question has There seems to be inequality when it comes to both genders being granted their privileges. Gender inequality refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. Numerous individuals today face different kinds of privileges due to their gender. Many find themselves struggling in today’s society for several reasons such as gender differences or how society views each gender as a whole. This has been a conflict that has affected many generations.

For example, if a woman molests a child, she will typically get less of a sentence than what a man would get. According to Kanowitz from the National Criminal Justice Reference Service, “Women have historically [been receiving different] treatment because of their sex, often to their benefit. The female offender [tends] to receive substantially different treatment by police, courts, and correctional institutions” (1969). It seems that some magistrates or judges treat offending behaviors and histories differently based on a person’s gender. On average, men receive harsher sentences than women do. Another study made by Sonja Starr, an assistant law professor at the University of Michigan, found that “Men are given much higher sentences than women convicted of the same crimes in [the] federal court[s]. Men receive sentences that are 63 percent higher, on average, than their female counterparts. Females arrested for a crime are also significantly more likely to avoid charges and convictions entirely, and twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted (2012).” Men make up the majority of the population in prisons, and they have an imprisonment rate that is higher than that of women due to the many reasons that were stated
