Gender Inequality In Hong Kong

The idea of woman’s right and equality has imported to Hong Kong over 60 years. However, inequality are still appear in this land and women are facing increasing unfair treatments in job opportunities. Female workers only take up minority over all workers in key industries with approximately less earning with the work when compared to male workers. Over half of the complaints received by the Equal Opportunities Commission were concerned workplaces, of which more than forty percentage were related to gender (Ngo). Some women in mainland China need to accept unfair conditions, such as no pregnancy or marriage is allowed when the contract is in operation, in order to be employed (Chiu).

A number of female workers believe that the discrimination in workplace towards women is because of the employers' concerns. According to Kingsley, he explains that women are genetically less aggressive when compared with men. Women are less dominance seeking and unwilling to take risk. They cooperate with people rather than compete with others which makes them less attractive to employers. Wassener reports that women all over the world found that having a child is often the turning point for them. They are forced, or chose to leave the work force to care child at home because of the nurtureance. Chiu says that the commitment to the company of female workers after marriage or having a child is in doubt and the paid maternity leave made employers struggle whether they should employ a female worker. In addition, Wassener mentions that many employers are not willing to provide better non-financial welfare, for example, better maternity benefits or longer vacations, to their employees.

Kingsley emphasizes men will continue to dominate or lead in certain areas based on their personal strength and taste, just as women will head in other areas. Changes in workplaces and requirement of workers will continuous , and these changes will bring different impacts to both sexes. Achieve gender equality is important to construct good relationship and respect, and then create a harmonious society. Without discrimination or unfair treatments, people can discover and fully utilize their own potential and competitive advantage. Better education system and training programs are need to change the traditional views of the public. Also, government should make better laws and work harder to make the workplace a discrimination free place.
