Vincent Freeman was one of the last individuals that was conceived “naturally”. Vincent was born with poor eyesight, had heart problems, and had a life expectancy of about 30 years. Vincent’s dream was to travel into space but his specific gene makeup would not allow him to. He decided on a plan to buy another man’s identity, a former athlete. Jerome was a former star athlete that was paralyzed from a car accident. Jerome agreed to give him his elite DNA to give Vincent the chance to be a part of the space team. Vincent just had to make sure that he does not leave any traces of his DNA around. Vincent succeeds in the Gattaca space program as soon as he had Jerome’s genetics. Gattaca’s brother was genetically engineered making him the superior brother in a lot of aspects. The American Heritage dictionary defines genetic engineering as,“scientific alteration of the structure of genetic material in a living organism. It involves the production and use of recombinant DNA.”. Not only was it hard for Gattaca to accept the physical problems he had, but he was also very discriminated against. This represented the discrimination that can come along with genetic engineering. If society turns to genetic engineering, it could possibly have negative impacts. Just like Gattaca, people could be discriminated against because the genes that they have. The one’s that have been genetically modified could possibly get the upper hand in many aspects. They could get better jobs, causing them to succeed greater in life. Also people could start sharing a lot of the same traits. The more positive genetic qualities people would find, the more that trait would be replicated. This could cause a great lack in human
