Do diesels have more torque and horsepower than gas engines? Diesel engines have more torque out of them because they have more compression. They have a compression ratio of (17:10) (Schifsky). This ratio explain the diesel and air mixture in the engine of a diesel engine. Gas engine has quit a bit less compression. They have (9:1) compression ratio (Schifsky).Gas engine has less compression with gas and air in the engine chamber. Gas engines have a slight advantage on horsepower because they can turn more rotations per minutes (RPM). The fuel mileage out of them are about equal unless the vehicle is hauling a load the mileage advantage will go to the diesel because the torque gives a better mileage. The advantage will go to diesels more than …show more content…
Diesel motors do not have power, but they have the torque for hauling and pulling. This in returns means they have more torque in there motors. They are made for drag on the motor and last longer with more strain. They have more compression in the cylinders which makes and generates more torque than horsepower out of the motor. The cylinder is the part of the motor that has the piston, and where the fuel goes to create combustion. The compression ratio is (17:10 verse gas which is (9:1) (Schifsky). The high compression means they do not turn very many RPM (rotations per minute). Diesels have lower RPM in return makes less acceleration and speed for more torque and slightly less horsepower than gas motors. Diesels do not have spark plugs which means they start on high compression. They have less maintenance than gas motors. Most diesels have longer spanned of time between oil changes. Gas motors go three to six thousands miles. Diesels go eight to twelve thousand …show more content…
They have 33% more efficiency out of diesel fuel than gas. Diesels usually give close to forty miles to a gallon out of them depending on the size of the vehicle (Almeida). They have ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel that has improved exhaust treatments. They also have come up with biodiesel fuel to help make these standards on diesel vehicles. This is made of vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant grease. Such as french fry grease and used oil. ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and biodiesel fuel are cleaner burning fuel than petroleum based diesel fuel. There 's one downside to biodiesel fuel it is a dirty fuel when it comes to the fuel lines and fuel system of a diesel. If it is not properly refined and prepared. Their is a farm fuel for diesels that is illegal to use in on road vehicles. If it is a farm truck or tractor, they can burn farm fuel it is dyed red for easy identification. It has a higher sulfur count for off the road diesels for better performance and more power out of the
Dodge want to make a diesel engine that was light still had power and also great fuel economy
Diesel mechanics fix and maintain every part associated with the diesel engine. There are many different branches of diesel technology which can include construction and farm equipment, over the road trucks, light duty pickups and stationary engines to name a few. A mechanic must be familiar with major brands of engines like Cummins and Cat. They can perform simple tasks of swapping out a bad component to completely overhauling an engine. The median pay for mechanics is “$42,320 per year or $20.35 per hour (United States).” When overtime hours are reached mechanics receive one and a half times pay for work performed. Negative parts of the job are the amount of overtime hours, the dirtiness of the work, and the cost of tools. Positive parts of the job are overtime pay, hands on, and traveling for work. The job outlook for growth in the diesel field “is projected to grow 9 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations (United States).” The field of diesel mechanics is still growing today and will continue for a...
The history of the diesel truck engines began why back in the late 19th century.
The Wankel rotary engine named after the designer, Felix Wankel, was engineered in the early 1930’s. The rotary engine was unlike the conventional four stroke internal combustion engines and lacked the need for pistons, valves and camshafts. With only three moving parts involved in the design, this engine showed great promise in reliability and efficiency. The first Wankel rotary model was shown in 1960, not as an engine, but as a pump drive. Instead of the very complicated system involved in a conventional reciprocating piston engine, the wankel engine incorporated triangular “rotors” (see figure 1) that rotate within an epitrochoidal chamber around an eccentric shaft. Not only is this engine much more simple (only 3 moving parts rather
Diesel mechanics are practically the backbone of this country. Everyone knows that things are delivered via eighteen wheelers these days occasionally they need to be repaired and have maintenance done to them. When that happens who’s there to save the day? DIESEL MECHANICS that’s who! You’re about to learn what it takes to become a diesel mechanic and what you’ll make when you are one.
The inventor of diesel was Rudolf Diesel; he patented his invention in 1898. “Diesel is a petroleum based fuel with a high energy content helping diesel go further per gallon than most other alternatives”(Diesel Forum). Instead of using a spark plug inside the combustion chamber to ignite the air/fuel mixture, a diesel engine compresses it. A combustion chamber is a closed space where the explosion happens inside the engine. When people think of diesel they may think of huge 18 wheeler trucks. Big 18 wheeler trucks are made to transport goods and other materials. 18 wheeler trucks have incredible torque and miles per gallons(MPG) compared to a gasoline engine.”Diesel is more than 33% more efficient than gasoline is when it comes to your fuel mileage”(Cars Direct). Diesels have a bad reputation for being too loud and too dirty compared to other vehicles. But all of that has changed throughout the years. Diesel engines can be used in farming, mining, construction and in the movement of goods. Diesel engines are used all around people everyday. Most public transportation run on diesel engines like buses, and trains....
Biodiesel is considered an environmentally friendly alternative because it reduces the amount many toxic substances. Plants such as soybeans require carbon dioxide from the air to produce their stems, roots and leaves. During biodiesel production from soybean oil, carbon dioxide is produced and released in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is considered a green house gas (GHG). However, this cycle of GHG emission does not neccersarily contribute to the atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. This is because the next soybean crop will reuse the carbon dioxide emitted for its growth. Another important environmental benefit is that biodiesel reduces particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. These benefits occur because biodiesel contains 11% oxygen by weight. Oxygen allows the fuel to burn better, resulting in fewer emissions from unburned fuel. And lastly, biodiesel fuels do not contain any sulfur and does not have an unpleasant smell when it is emitted from vehicles.
85% equipments use single-cylinder diesel engines, while the rest use multi-cylinder ones. In the market of multi-cylinder diesel the competition is less intense because of excessive demand. The prospect is much more promising. Longxi has a certain competitive advantage in this market, resulting from its popular product such as SL2100.
The diesel engines combustion process is a little different than the typical gasoline engine. A couple main things that diesel engines have that gasoline engines do not are, carburetors and spark plugs. Unlike a gasoline engine, air is first allowed into the cylinder rather than a fuel and air mixture. Once the air is compressed it creates a source of heat, then a mist of fuel is injected to start the combustion process which then creates the energy. Since diesel engines do not have spark plugs they are able to take in larger amount of fuel, this obviously means there will be more power and will guarantee better efficiency. Another thing that is very important is that diesel tends to be a better lubricant than gasoline, being that it is a better lubricant there will be less friction which will generally increase the life of the engine (Woodford). Diesel engines operate at slower speeds than gasoline engines, therefore diesel engines tend to have longer lifespans than gasoline
Both gasoline and ethanol have been around since the time of Henry Ford. Gasoline has been the more accessible of all of them. Ethanol and natural gas have been gaining more support over the years and now gasoline contains ten percent ethanol. Propane is mostly used in fleet vehicles. Cars today can run on gasoline with a little ethanol, but too much ethanol can severely damage a vehicle. Only flex fuel vehicles can handle more than ten percent ethanol in a system. Natural gas vehicles are starting to come onto the market. All three fuels have their pros and cons, but the ultimate decision is up to the consumer.
Turbofan is the combination of two words.”Turbo” means gas turbine engine which takes mechanical energy from combustion and “Fan” means a fan is use which consumes the mechanical energy from gas turbine to accelerate air rearwards.
If all cars in the United States were powered by electricity instead of gas, many things would be affected. One thing that would be affected is the pollution levels. They would decrease because, according to Union of Concerned Scientists, cars and trucks that are gas powered are responsible for about one fifth of all of the United States pollution emissions. They emit roughly 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and various greenhouse gases for every one gallon of gas. 5 of the 24 pounds of CO produced per gallon is made from the extraction, production, and delivery of diesel or gas. The other 19 pounds is made by the trapping of heat in the car which is then propelled through the exhaust pipe, and into the
NiSource is one of the biggest natural gas distribution companies in the USA. Company is not responsible for the production of natural gas, but rather purchases fossil fuel at the source and transmits supply thru its pipelines to industries and local costumers. Natural gas can be transported to distribution facilities in two ways: underground gas pipelines or shipped by the sea in LNG tankers. In nature during the extraction, natural gas exists as a gas, which needs to be captured by special pipeline system designed for gathering processes. Captured gas contains water and other impurities that have to be removed in production well. In order to be transported, it needs to be cooled and transformed into liquid, which increases transportation efficiency to processing units and improves transportation cost ratio. Regasification is the process when "wet", liquid natural gas is processed and changed to pipeline quality natural gas. Natural gas needs to be turned back to gas in order to be useful for residential and commercial customers. This process needs to be monitored and measured for quality and content of natural gas due to the risk of pipeline rupture and safety. "Natural gas entering the system that is not within certain specific gravities, pressures, Btu content range, or water content level will cause operational problems, pipeline deterioration, or even cause pipeline rupture."1 Natural gas transported to distributors is called "dry" gas due to the physical state.
Diesel engines are a marvel of the world and have been since creation in 1892. Today there are several types of these engines including, two-stroke and four-stroke engines as well as the idea of how diesel engines operate. The diesel engine is a necessary component of the shipping industry as well as the daily lives of people.
Bad gas prices are causing more car companies to make more hybrid cars to save people money in the long run. Not all diesels are gas guzzlers. Most of the new diesel trucks get a lot better gas mileage now than they did ten years or so ago. Volkswagen is now beginning to make this new car that has a Turbo Diesel Injection Clean Diesel motor in it. Unlike old diesel engines, this one is more modern to get better gas mileage and be cleaner to the environment. This new car that they have invented gets much better gas mileage than the older diesel engines that were in old trucks and cars.
