More than eight million dollars is bet on the Super Bowl alone and 1.34 billion has been bet in Nevada casinos in just one year for football. There is so much money bet on sports. 60-70 billion dollars is illegally bet on NCAA football, 4.8 billion dollars has been gambled on sports in Nevada’s casinos 2017. The FBI estimates 2.5 billion dollars is bet illegally every year and 30-40 million is illegally bet on MLB. There are people who have made millions off sports betting. Billy Walters made millions off sports betting and gambling and others have made millions off of horse racing which is similar to sports betting. Baseball has been through lots of adversity throughout the years. Strikes, wars and corruption have given the game a black eye but nothing has hurt the integrity of the game more than gambling. Having baseball played honestly is the most important part of baseball and doubting the integrity can cause serious harm to the game.

College sports are so entertaining because any team can win any game due to the spread of great athletes all over the country. If colleges started to pay the athletes, whatever team had the most money would have the best athletes, meaning there would only be a couple of good teams in each sport and they would dominate. Professional sports teams are a collection of the best and most skilled athletes in that sport that can play for 15 or more years. In college, athletes only have four years of eligibility before they are ineligible and can not participate in college athletics anymore and many of the great athletes leave after one or two years of playing college sports. If money was used to pay the athletes, the corruption of college sports would increase. Money is never a good idea to be involved in sports, because it always causes bribery or exploitation. For example, the recent events with the FIFA organization and how some of the top authority figures have just been banned for many years for taking bribes, illegal ticket sales, and other scandals (Davis). This relates because it goes to show any CEO or president of a company can be bought and if money started to get more involved in the world of college sports it is hard not to think that some authority figure for some team would be bribed. Even the students might be involved in the bribery. If college athletes were to get paid there would be a limit to how much they would get paid. Fans and sponsors of the college teams would then offer additional benefits to get the athletes “persuaded” to come to their school. Then student athletes will not have to attend class or even participate in the student part of student athlete. To the best of my knowledge, gambling on fantasy sports remains illegal in the state of Washington alongside five other states in the United States. Before I go further into my claim I would like to give my definition of gambling as well as my definition of fantasy sports. Gambling, in my opinion, consist of a game of chance. I am in favor that college football should not be banned. This sport is such a big part of many males, and a few females’ lives. This sport has caused many injuries, but so has baseball, basketball, or even cheerleading. You have high paid athletes asking for multi-million dollar contacts, while at the same time you have doctors not even making close to that amount. There are corporations buying out sports teams, buying stadiums, and buying everything that has to do with sports. Someone may ask why they do this. Sports are one of the most profitable industries in the world. Everyone wants to get their hand on a piece of the action. Those individuals and industries that spend hundreds of millions of dollars on these sports teams are hoping to make a profit, but it may be an indirect profit. It could be a profit for the sports club, or it could be a promotion for another organization (i.e. Rupert Murdoch, FOX). The economics involved with sports has drastically changed over the last ten years. In the United States, we spend about 13% of all money on sports and entertainment. Sports has obviously done its job; entertained and drained money out of our pockets.
