Gail Collins and the Candidates of 2016 The world of Politics and the Presidential election has definitely changed since the last elections were held. On the Democratic side, there is Bernie Sanders, an old man who just wants to make the country better, and Hillary Clinton, who wants to prove that women can do anything that men can. On the Republican side, there is Donald Trump, who does not have a single clue on how politics work, a number of other candidates who are somewhat decent, and Ted Cruz, the candidate that almost everyone hates. Gail Collins has been a columnist for the New York Times since 1995 and was also the first female editorial page editor. Gail Collins has been following the political race for the presidency since day one, updating her audiences on things like the movements of Donald Trump and the level of hatefulness for Ted Cruz. Sometimes during her articles, Collins will bring up a seemingly random point that would appear to not be at all related to the present topic, but then is able to tie it back into whatever she was previously talking about. Almost like an abrupt change in subject. In her article Coming to Terms with Donald, published January 22, 2016, Collins talks about Donald Trump, a reoccurring topic within her articles, and how the worst drama about him before the presidential race was the fact that he and his wife were getting divorced. In the fifth paragraph on that article, Collins suddenly shifts from talking about a potential sex scandal to time travel. Of course she later ties that back into how if she told her fellow “Donald desk” colleagues that Donald Trump would be running for president, they would not believe her and would go back to writing their articles about divorces and sex scandals. This is a very interesting choice that Gail Collins makes and this type of writing really stylizes Collins and makes her stick out from the
