Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero explores the pitfalls of adolescence and the struggles that go along with growing up. This book reveals the mind of a less than average teenage girl and the aspects of her tumultuous life. From this it is inferred that a theme for this novel could be that sometimes the difficult experiences in your life can make you stronger. One day Gabi went into the garage and her father was lying unconscious on the ground with a pipe in his hand. He had died. She called the police and everything but it was no use, his death was caused by a meth overdose. Nevertheless Gabi faced her father’s death with grace and courage. His death had inspired her to read poetry in front of people, something she never could do before. The poem was about him and how nobody knew what it was like to have a dad who was a meth addict, watching him deteriorate day after day. Gabi kept saying over and over “ But you don’t know my dad.” Yet she fought through the tough times and became even stronger because of the trials she faced. …show more content…

Her mom always pressures her to lose weight, and she feels like she is not worthy of being Mexican because her skin is very white. But although she struggles with this, she continues to remain strong. Gabi takes a step forward when she has the confidence to go running with her boyfriend Martin. Even though she is embarrassed of “all my goodies and bits and pieces will be bouncing up and down” she goes anyway and actually has fun. Her difficult times have made her enjoy the good times more because she stayed strong and never gave up. Gabi also stops comparing herself to the darker latinas.
