One of the many goals I aspire to reach as a future healthcare provider is to treat patients holistically. I strive to not only treat the cases presented, but to help identify the root cause of their ailments to prevent subsequent symptoms and disease. I also see myself educating patients about living a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, a well balanced diet, as well as avoiding habits such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. Each patient is unique from one another so it is important to treat them as such. By offering healthcare that is holistic and specific to each individual, not only are we increasing the likelihood of the treatment plan to work efficiently, but we are also building a rapport with the patient by understanding
Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..
Holistic medicine is health care that contains all the aspects of one' s temperament to get the optimum state of welfare. It encompasses the method of trying into the wholeness of the person as well as biological process, physical, environmental, spiritual, life-style and social values. medical care includes just about all treatments and designation identified to attain balance in temperament. It upholds the responsibility of training one's self to realize the perfect over-all health and well being.
A nurse is able to achieve this great balance, with the patient and self, by being conscious of the environment that surrounds them and through self awareness. For example, in the scene of an emergency, first and foremost, a nurse must check the environment before started emergent care. Both the patient and nurse must be safe for treatment to be effective. The environment is what surrounds us; our workplace, home, communities, issues we think about, the people we interact with, and the emotions associated with these interactions. The nurse knows that all of these components play an integral role in maintaining stability in a person’s life and health. The nurse assumes care of not just a disease process but of a human being as a whole; a family, a livelihood, a spirit, a person. A nurse knows that in order for holistic care to be effective, the care taker themselves should be at a point of stability as well. A true nurse knows that in order to excel you must know your limits and understand that while your main goal is to help the patient regain their strength, identity, and independence, that goal does not have to be achieved by compromising your own self, identity, and
Holistic took place on a long term care unit, where my patient was diagnois with a sacral fracture and leukemia. I introduced myself as a student nurse, and told her I was on a eight week clinical placement. I asked her open end questions, that essentialy gave me back ground information on Mrs. Holistic past. Throught my care for Mrs. Holistic, I found that listening and empathizing with her concerns really helped develope a therapeutic relationship. We both had a sense of humour , which alwayed helped are conversations grow. I viewed Mrs. Holistic not just a patient, but as someone mother, sister, wife and friend. According to the Healthy People Database, in 2010 the aging population was estimated at 40 million, this number is expected rise to nearly 70 million by the year 2030 (National Center for Health Statistics, 2000). At the forefront of health concerns for this aging population will be the intervention, management and treatment of chronic diseases. This increase in both this specific population as well as the required medical care will place a significant amount of stress on an already distressed healthcare system, which in turn will affect the availability of recourses and costs. Including patients in their self care with strategic health promotion such as encouragement and education geared towards specific socioeconomic groups will be more cost effective and beneficial in the management of chronic disease. Studies indicate that patients involved in self management of disease processes often have better patient outcomes.

I believe people are connected beings with fundamental pride and values. To appropriately care for a person, the patient must be considered as a whole package. In order to do this, the person’s physical, social, psychological, cultural, spiritual, and aspects of their life must be considered when creating a plan of care. Environment can be defined as “the aggregate of surrounding things, conditions, or influences; surrounding and the social and cultural forces that shape the life of a person or a population,” (n.d.). A person’s environment is such a large part of their life and such an influencing factor on their day-to-day decisions. Their environment includes their socio-economic status (can they afford their prescriptions? Is the test that’s being run really necessary or an undue burden on them financially?), demographics (what is their understanding of health? What are their religious beliefs? what are their race/are they more susceptible to certain conditions?), access of to health care (do they drive/have transportation? Do they have health insurance?), and social support (are they alone? Do they have too much support with too many opinions?). As a nurse, one must always know a person is in continuous contact with their environment and the stress that come along with it. An appropriate and relaxing environment can impact a patient’s adherence to their medications and treatments and reduce their recovery time. The third concept on which I based my philosophy is health, which is the absence of illness. As a nurse and/or practitioner, it is important to focus on the patient’s main health complaint as well as any associated symptoms, needs, and overall wellness of the patient. First and foremost, it is essential that health care providers remain empathetic, knowledgeable and non-judgemental towards people facing a chronic illness. During my career as a registered nurse I have had the privilege of caring for my patients at the bedside and meeting their needs holistically. Additionally, the safety of my patients is one of the most important aspects of my current role. Every person’s needs must be recognized, respected, and filled if he or she must attain wholeness. The environment must attuned to that wholeness for healing to occur. Healing must be total or holistic if health must be restored or maintained. And a nurse-patient relationship is the very foundation of nursing (Conway et al 2011; Johnson, 2011). The Theory recognizes a person’s needs above all. It sets up the conducive environment to healing.
