Functional Assessment The functional family assessment shows how individuals behave in relation to one another. It shows the in-the-moment aspect of a family’s life. There are two basic aspects of family functioning: instrumental and expressive (Wright and Leahey, 2013). Instrumental Functioning Instrumental functioning of the family shows the routine activities of daily living. This area is important for families with health problems in particular (Wright and Leahey, 2013). The father, DM, wakes up around five thirty in the morning to be to work by seven o’clock. EM eats three meals per day and has a regular schedule of going to school five days per week. On the weekend, EM participates in family activities that CM and DM plan for the family. He goes to friends’ houses and enjoys helping DM when it comes to anything and everything he does around the house. EM goes to bed between 6pm and 7pm and does not regularly take any medication. The middle son, JM, wakes up around 6:15am when CM wakes up his older brother. JM goes to preschool three times per week for a half day at the local Lutheran church that the family is part of. JM eats three meals per day and has a regular schedule. On the weekends JM also participates in family activities. JM goes to bed with EM between 6pm and 7pm each night and does not regularly take any medication. The youngest daughter, AM, wakes up once through the night and is normally up between 5:30am and 6am and then takes a long nap around ten in the morning and short naps throughout the day. AM is still breast-feeding and has not yet been introduced to food. AM is currently cutting teeth so she is abnormally grumpy and does not take any medications regularly. This is another strength of the family. They are optimists and always think about the positive aspects of every situation. The most evident weakness is the busyness. DM isn’t home often and it puts more stress on CM to do everything for the family. CM does all of the day-to-day chores while still caring for all of their children during the weekdays when DM isn’t home. This isn’t easy on DM to not be home as often as he is. He, from time to time, feels like his is missing out on a lot of the things happening in his life. Another weakness is that the parenting is mostly left up to the mother. This cannot only be stressful for both parents but also stressful for the children. Not having help from extended family is also a weakness for the M family. They get a large amount of help from their nanny and they close friend group but not having the family help with the children is hard. When family helps out with children, it is not only easier on the parents but it also promotes a bond between the children and those members of the
