It is important to recognize the causes for major events in world history. The French revolution was a major development for France and after the revolution, France was never the same again. The cause of the French revolution can be derived from the economic, social, and political crises that were occurring simultaneously. The most influential factor for the French revolution was the economic problems that were occurring. The king was unable to pay back the government for the wars that it took part in. There was a large national debt and the group that was relied on to pay back this debt was the peasants. The peasants were already in poverty and were unable to have a sustained lifestyle with the prices of everything going up. The French also needed a tax system reform. The current tax system made the peasants poorer and the nobles richer. The tax system also allowed for the tax collectors to pocket a portion of the money for their own needs instead of towards the government. In France, there were three social classes which had no balance whatsoever. The First class were the clergymen who had a lot of the power and money of France. The second were the nobles who also had a lot of money, but they had no political power. The third class, the peasants and middle class made up 98% of the population and were in deep poverty. They had no voice in the government and were unable to do anything to fix their situation. The peasants had to pay a majority of the tax despite having the least amount of money. They had a backwards agriculture where the money spent farming could not profit them and bring them wealth.
