We are constantly told that college is the best option that we must take in order to at least live comfortably for yours to come. But what does that really mean? Yes, step one, you apply for your desired college or university and once you choose which one to attend, then you’re officially in college right. But then what? This is the part where all that helpful advice usually stops. You’re on your own. Left to fend for yourself and hoping to come out on the other side with some kind of degree, but what kind of degree is that and will it be enough to accomplish that comfortable life that we aimed for when we barely started. Instead of following others footsteps by stopping at an average high school diploma, getting hired at an adequate enough paying job for its time, and then working for the rest of our lives to make any kind of living. Freeman Hrabowski, author of “Colleges Prepare People for Life”, elaborates on the importance of how college is beneficial and can help people grow as an individual in more ways than one. Yes, a college degree makes someone more credible when it comes to the hiring process to employers, but it also encourages them to become more responsible for themselves for not only their successes but their failures as well. Giving them the ability to truly understand the saying “If at first you don’t succeed, Try, try, try again” by William Edward Hickson. Hrabowski states that “College graduates are much more likely to be employed than those with only a high school diploma and earn substantially higher salaries… college graduates aren’t suckers; they’re the winners in a globally competitive economy” (260). In other words, though some may believe that college is a waste of time and/or money and that they could simply get a job now and already start earning for them, but this is not the way. The main degrees of focus were the standard high school diploma, associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Analyzed through a financial aspect, each degree is beneficial in their own way. Their differences were established upon earning rates by each to prove that degree types do matter when it comes to life earnings that an individual can obtain. Since most of the world is built on the fact that money is essential or necessary to survive in today’s economy, why wouldn’t someone go to college to earn some kind of proof of credibility that helps set them apart from the average high school diploma.
