“Allegory of The Cave” is a short story written by Plato. The piece tells a story of prisoners trapped in a cave and chained to the walls. Eventually, one man escapes from the chains and goes out into the world gaining knowledge and achieving enlightenment. The other prisoners don’t believe what he is saying and instead of choosing to break free, they decide to remain where they are at and stick to their beliefs. The piece is centralized around the idea of personal freedom, confinement, and maintaining a belief. Plato’s story symbolizes society for hundreds of years where people choose to leave their life behind in one country to move to another for a better life. Personal freedom is not always a stable choice and it can hurt how people view that freedom compared to what they have. When most people think of freedom, they think of being free from a higher power which can be true depending on the scenario. Freedom comes in all shapes and sizes. Freedom for the unnamed man is deciding to go out and make a change for his own well-being which included consequences, that he decided to take on, and carrying on regardless what others thought. Maybe when he left he did not know potential harms, but he did experience some. He also dealt with his fellow prisoners, who saw the change as harmful, when he came back; They spoke down to him on his decisions. He did not let others affect his decision but he did hear what they had to say. Freedom is not what you always expect it to be, especially in today’s world, but it can be worth the experience.
