The Power of Pride

Can pride be a destructive force? Yes, in “The Scarlet Ibis” a crippled boy named Doodle dies because his brother was ashamed that he wasn't normal. In “the Stag at the Pool” a stag is eaten by a lion because he took too much pride in his antlers. So yes pride can be a destructive force.
In “The scarlet Ibis” a boy named Doodle is born, and he is crippled. He can't do the same things as others and his brother is ashamed of that. He says “He was born when i was six and was from the outset a disappointment”(344). The brother also says “... I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him in a pillow”(345). It says “His hand trembling, reached out and when he touched the casket he screamed”(347). The book also says” I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk”(345). This is yet another example proving pride can be a destructive force.
Again in “The Scarlet Ibis” you see examples proving that pride can be a destructive force. During a storm the Brother tells Doodle that they need to go back home, and he knew he couldn't do it by himself. The Brother then took off and when he didn't see Doodle anywhere he went back. When he found him he was dead, simply because his body couldn't take it. In “the Stag at the Pool” a stag is eaten because he had too much pride in his antlers. The stag saw a lion and was trying to run away but his antlers got him stuck and the lion ate him. This again proves pride can be a destructive force.
In “The scarlet Ibis” it does say that the brother spent a lot of time with Doodle, and was trying to help him. The thing is he only did it because he was ashamed of Doodle being crippled. In the book it says “Doodle only walked because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother”(347). This proves pride is a destructive
