The Sport of Cheerleading

Short skirts, loud voices, and tons of energy; that is what most high school students define as a typical cheerleader. Most of the teenagers in the world will have this opinion, even adults share this belief. Cheerleaders are also seen as want to be athletes. All they do is just cheer on other teams, they do not actually do anything other than a few stunts here or there. It may not soud that difficult but it is a lot harder than one would think. Although cheerleading is formally deemed not a sport, it is one of the most dangerous and demanding sports out there, though the lack of the title does not help make it any safer. In injury statistics Cheerleading is ranked number one in all women's activities high school, and college. Second in all sports right behind football players. The impact of a cheerleader falling from a stunt and onto one of her bases is the equivalent to being tackled. Though it is just a hard as any other high school sport, legally, it is not a sport. The Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2012 upheld a previous ruling that cheerleading did not meet the requirements to be considered a sport under Title that requires equal opportunity for males and females in athletics. More than 30 states now recognize cheerleading as a high school sport. One frustrating block to increased safety is the refusal of some states to classify cheerleading as a "sport". Such a classification would subject it to much more oversight and regulation. Instead, it's considered an "activity" like chess club. Gymnastics is both men and women trying to perform elaborate flips, tricks and other acrobatic feats while on mats, beams or trampolines. Cheerleaders may not use beams or trampolines, but they do do their performances on mats. Cheerleaders do, with or without the help of their teammates, flips and acrobatic feats to try to "wow" their judges or the crowd their performing for. Though dancing is controversial about being a sport or an art, it is considered to be a sport because it is featured in the olympics. Cheerleading and dancing are basically the same exact thing except that dancers don't do everything cheerleaders do. They may do jumps or things to that sort, but they never do the risky things that the cheerleaders do. Both cheerleaders and dancers normally do their routines in front of judges, have national championships, and commonly do their routines along with music.
