The novel Freak the Mighty, written by Rodman Philbrick, is a wonderful book told from the perspective of Max (one of the two main characters), is a story of unforgettable friendship. Max and Kevin (the other main character) meet for the first time in preschool. Years later, Kevin moves in to Max’s neighborhood. This is when the friendship of hope, confidence, and strength build up in both Max and Freak, and together they accomplish what no one can.
The book starts off with Max thinking about “The Unvanquished Truth” and how max is reminding himself “I never had a brain until Freak came along and let me borrow his for a while” (1). He takes Max and forces him to come with him. They walk to Iggy’s and Loretta’s house. After some time they end up at a dark old building where they tie Max up. This is where the trouble started. After being there for awhile, Loretta tries to save Max. Killer Kane (Max’s dad) tries to choke her to death, but Max reminded him that he remember the time that his father killed his mother. Soon after Killer Kane lets go of Loretta and started to choke Max. Kevin finds them, with a squirt gun in his hand. He says that in the squirt gun is acid and that he will shoot it if Killer Kane doesn’t let go of Max. The request was not followed so the “asid” was shot. Killer Kane screamed in pain and let go of max. The cops arrived and Killer Kane was taken to jail.
The book ends tragically with Kevin’s birthday. Kevin went straight to the hospital after a medical emergency. After a few days at the hostpidal Kevin was supposedly going into the surgery for his mechanical body. Max finds out the next day that there was no surgery. Kevin passed and the mechanical body was only a fib to hide his soon to be death. Max goes out of control. He breaks glass windows and doors, trying to find Kevin. He did not believe it.
