Constantine, directed by Francis Lawrence, shows the story of an advanced exorcist who wishes to stop the Devil crossing over from Hell into the real, living world. He wants to accomplish this before his lung cancer takes over and kills him. The obsessive smoker finally finds a way to be forgiven for all his sins and makes his way over to Heaven by helping an LA detective investigate her sister's suicide. Throughout the movie, Lawrence shows the readers some techniques which gives us a strong impression of the main character, John Constantine. Indisputably, Tim Burton has one of the world’s most distinct styles when regarding film directing. His tone, mood, diction, imagery, organization, syntax, and point of view within his films sets him apart from other renowned directors. Burton’s style can be easily depicted in two of his most highly esteemed and critically acclaimed films, Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Burton ingeniously incorporates effective cinematic techniques to convey a poignant underlying message to the audience. Such cinematic techniques are in the lighting and editing technique categories. High key and low key relationships plus editing variations evinces the director’s elaborate style. He utilizes these cinematic techniques to establish tone mood, and imagery in the films.
John “Binx” Bolling is a 1960s version of Dante, a man awoken in the middle of his life beginning a desperate and philosophical search for meaning. Like The Inferno, The Moviegoer is set in a Catholic liturgically important time and spans the length of a week. The reader meets Binx on Mardi Gras, the last day of Epiphany season, and on Ash Wednesday, a day of repentance and reassessment in Catholicism, he begins his search. The meaning of Binx’s search is questioned from the onset of the book. He addresses the reader by saying, “The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life. To become aware of the search is to be onto something. This essay will explore how horror films reflect the fears of both individuals and societies focusing on the film Cloverfield (Cloverfield, 2008). Films can often serve as an astute reflection of reality in a varying number of ways depending on the genre. The horror film can often serve as an analogy for the horrors of the real world. In the case of Cloverfield Director Matt Reeves creates a solid allegory of the September 11th terror attacks on New York City. “The horror film can bring us uncomfortably close to the worst that could ever happen—to a character or to ourselves” (Kawin, 2012).
In 1939, Charlie Chaplin was a world famous movie star who released a movie that would be very controversial, The Great Dictator. The movie was meant to ridicule Hitler, as at that time he was at the height of his power. At the end of the movie, Chaplin delivers a speech as a Jewish barber mistaken for Chaplin’s Hitler- like dictator. Chaplin uses speech rhetoric to convey Chaplin's message of hope and light. The film did very well in the theaters and was Chaplin's most successful movie. The speech in the film, The Great Dictator, used it's influential place in society with cinema to convey a message of peace, hope, and independence.
When you meet him you can tell there is something off about him but many people just associated it with his brilliant mind. He later begins showing signs of having a mental illness. Despite his knowledge the illness takes over him and impedes in him doing his work. It gets in the way of his personal and work life. John had to fight the hallucinations and take medication for him to be well. It was hard to see such a brilliant intelligent man go from one extreme to another. It was like as soon as he had his mental out break all was taken from him. With the right medication and with John being compliant in taking his medications he is able to control his schizophrenia and hallucinations and try to return to his old self. With the help of his wife, friends and healthcare team he is able to remember what life was like before his mental illness
In the film V for Vendetta the director James Mcteigue uses a range of different film techniques in order to gain the audience's attention and to make the movie more interesting. The four film techniques I’m going to focus on in this essay are editing, music, camera angles and the lighting. I am going to do this by analysing the ‘Domino Montage’ scene.
When comics were first coming out, they were not all that popular but in todays’ world, they have become very popular and well known. Several of these comics have been turned into films, which is one of the many reasons why the popularity has been rising over the years. One of the most well known comics is Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. This comic was composed and released in 1986 by Frank Miller. With the usage of Frank Miller’s powerful, intense lines and the artwork done by Klaus Janson’s and Lynn Varley’s it has elevated this comic up to the very top of mainstream comics. In Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, the skillful illustrations on the pages successfully create the thought that there are underlying meanings, which makes the atmosphere a very intense one throughout the comic. The work of art that is presented on the pages in this comic are embedded in such a way that the pages become the continuum for the meaning. One of the main themes that are imbedded on the pages through the artwork in this book is the ideological struggle between Bruce Wayne and Batman.
I chose to analyze Despicable Me, an animated film geared towards a younger audience, because I was interested in examining underlying theories and messages that this film would be relaying to its viewers. Often times, when watching animated films, children are not aware of these messages, as they are absorbed by the characters, special effects, and humor. But as we have learned throughout this semester, our brains are subconsciously primed by the various surroundings we are exposed to. Since we also studied the impacts of entertainment, such as television and video games, on children, I wanted to see how a popular children’s film might also affect them.
The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 film directed by Victor Fleming, which follows Dorothy Gale on her journey through the magical land of Oz. Dorothy is swept away from a farm in Kansas to the land of Oz in a tornado and embarks on a quest to see the Wizard who can help her return to her home in Kansas. The director, uses a number cinematic techniques such as camera angles, lighting, colour and dialogue to portray a central theme of There’s no place like home.
The movie, Jesus of Nazareth, showed the Paschal Mystery in a secular and spiritual way, that everyone could understand. It went into great depth on almost every topic in the Gospels and historically with people like Pontius Pilate and Caiaphas. The Paschal Mystery is a very important to the Catholic religion as it is what differentiates us from other religions, especially Judaism. The fact that God joined us in human form, in the Incarnation, is amazing and shows the character of God, that He is loving and forgiving. Although the death of Jesus was horrible, it gave us our salvation and saved us from sin.
Through unique camera shots, Stanley Kubrick vividly captures and displays an emotional roller coaster of the facial expressions of Jack, Wendy, and Danny as they experience horror straight from hell. The Shining goes above and beyond the average horror film because of Kubrick’s brilliant vision and technical understanding of camera, lighting, and film. His choice of actors is phenomenal, and the script is changed in ways from the book that benefit the film medium and pulls on the emotions of its viewers.
Edwin S. Porter contributed the following editing styles and techniques to film. He used a dissolve between every shot just and he frequently had the same action repeated across the dissolves. According to Filmrefrence.com “Edison Company’s new Vitascope projector in Indiana and California, and Porter worked with them as a projectionist in Los Angeles and Indianapolis. Later that year he went to work for Raff & Gammon in New York but left after the Edison Company broke with Raff & Gammon. He then toured with entertainers through the Caribbean as an exhibitor of motion pictures, and in early 1897 he helped build the projector at the Eden Musée”(Filmrefrence.com.2014).
Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
