The next expedition to Roanoke was lead by “John White, a gifted amateur painter who kept a remarkable pictorial record of his experiences” (A Muse of Fire). Within six years this colony that was thought to be in a good location will have disappeared; “John White set off back to England for food and relief. On his return he blew a trumpet to announce his arrival. His men sang English songs, but there was no answer. The Roanoke colony was deserted”(A Muse of Fire). There are many different theories that many different people have compiled over the years including hostile Indians attacking the settlement. There is also the theory that comes from “scientists studying tree rings found that one of the worst droughts in eight hundred years took place during the settlement attempt” (Elvin 16).
In sum, many colonists were killed for various reasons. These reasons include sickness and disease, lack of resources, and where Jamestown was chosen to be built. This analysis was important because it included most of the main reasons why many Jamestown colonists
This theory is that the colonists had been attacked by indians which the colonists believed to be the Croatans. Scientists assume that the colonists survived the first attack from the indians which could have given them time to write the sprawlings on the gate. Then they believe that the second attack left the colonists either dead or taken prisoner. This theory makes sense but there are some faults that just don’t add up. The first fault is that if they had been at war with the indians why had there they been no blood drops or bodies when John White returned? . Some people believe that there had been no blood drop or bodies because the colonists had gone and attacked the indians ,but others some people say that colonists were smart and wouldn't have done that. The second fault is why wouldn’t have the colonists have explained more on the gate of the colony then just writing one word, Croatans?. This one can be easily avoided because some say that the colonists had been attacked while they were writing Croatans.
Everyone knows the story of how the Pilgrims came to America on the Mayflower and started a new life. But what about before the Pilgrims? John Smith says that “out of 110 of the first settlers 47 were gentlemen” (59). Gentlemen are rich people who eat a lot and don’t work. They also brought no apothecaries ( medicine makers ). This would be completely necessary because they would reduce the chance of getting sick. John Said ‘that they also only brought 1 surgeon” (59). You need more than 1 surgeon if he dies or gets sick you have no doctor. John also says “They only had 1 bricklayer” (59). That means they had one person to make houses that would take forever. These terrible decisions would be a large factor to the colonist death.
For centuries, the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island has been a controversial issue. Many theories exist that explain the disappearance of the colony. Some theories suggest that the colonists left the island to live with friendly neighboring Indians. Others suggest that a hurricane wiped out the colony or that a savage Indian tribe massacred them. The possibility of disease destroying them is also a debated topic. However, evidence indicates that the men and women left behind on Roanoke Island did not die because of massacre, disease, or starvation but went to live with the Croatoan Indians.
One similarity between smallpox and the black death was that they both established new trade with countries they had rarely traded with before. The outbreak of diseases ravages the Native population. Due to geographic regions and limitations, the Natives never suffered from such strong illnesses as smallpox, measles and the black plague. Some of the European colonies gave the Natives diseased infested animals and clothing. The English and the Natives did cooperate with each other due to it being in the best of their interests. Their mutual trust would later erode due to the English going back to their old habits and started to steal from the Natives.
The colonist made many mistakes that lead to the high death rate in early Jamestown. The people of Jamestown did not bring the correct people they needed to survive They brought one doctor and no apothecaries (druggists), so when people got sick there was one doctor to treat everyone. This caused death because there was no way to get better, if you have no doctor to treat you. On the first shipload of people, they brought no women and 47 gentlemen. Gentlemen were men who were not used to working with their hands.d. In a typical household in the 1600’s the women were the ones who cleaned the house and took care of the sick. However, without women, and only one doctor, there was no one to take care of the houses and the sick. Also, the settlers came to Jamestown for the first time in the middle of a drought and they brought no barrel makers If there was rainfall, how were they supposed to collect it? On top of all the other problems and lack of important people, the colonists also made stupid careless decisions. According to J.Frederick Fausz’s count of deaths in Virginia, they lost 11 people in a ‘boating accident.’ After all the people they have already lost to natives, disease and starvation, one would think that they would be more careful of accidents like loosing people in a careless boating accident. The last reason human error was such a major influence for death in Jamestown was because they made stupid decisions, like chopping off native’s heads when they had no issue beforehand. Chopping off someone’s head without reason causes revenge and the want kill your enemy’s men. Human error helps explain why so many colonists died. The settlers made so many stupid mistakes by bringing no women, the incorrect medical people, and the incorrect number of working people. The perspective the author gives to this book is a unique. Smallpox according to most histories does not play the role of a major character, but a minor part. In my opinion smallpox was a major factor during the Revolutionary War, and Feen focuses on several key areas which allows us to see just how bad this epidemic was and the grip it had not only on the soldiers, but the colonist as well.
It seems that the winter of 1609 was so bad that the many of the colonists died of starvation. They were made to eat their own excrement and flesh. They ate Indians and animals from the colony, including horses, dogs and rats, or anything they could find. But this was hard to believe, as the island was full of food. Maybe the cause of death was drought. Scientists have discovered that the worst drought in many years was between 1604 and 1609. They can tell this because of the tree samples that have been taken. No water meant that crops wouldn't grow, and animals would die, as well as humans. The problem with this theory is that down river, there was excess food. The men could have been too weak to gather food. Why?

Diseases like smallpox, measles, pneumonia, influenza, and malaria were unknown to the Native Americans until the Europeans brought these diseases over time to them. This triggered the largest population decline in all recorded history. Fifty percent of the Native American population had died of disease within twenty years. Soon after, Native Americans began to question their religion and doubted the ability of shamen to heal. This was the first step towards the destruction of Native cultures.
