You turn on the news to see that another crime had been solved that day. But how did they do it? It was the work of forensics and fingerprinting. Forensics and fingerprinting is used to solve crimes that would otherwise be impossible. Everyone's fingerprint is slightly different then the next guy, and every other guy and girl. Since you leave your fingerprints on everything, they can take your fingerprints and use them to find who committed the crime. They can also do a lot with DNA. Using forensics they can solve crimes with the dna left at the crime scene. Forensics and Fingerprinting had a significant impact on America by making it impossible to commit a crime and be unnoticed, solving cases that have been left for years and proving suspects innocent.

That is due to the work of forensics. There is a whole non profit organization called the Innocence Project that works to free innocents from prison. Around 300 people have been freed by forensics and 20 served time on death's row. Even though it is great that this can happen it isn’t a good thing it's happening in the first place. There are also a lot of problems with proving people innocent. Someone that committed the crime or was being accused of the crime could place false evidence at the scene to try to pin them as guilty. The prosecutor's, someone who is trying to prove them guilty, may know some information that could prove them innocent but hold it back to pin them as guilty. The police may also torture or intimidate someone they think is guilty to pleading guilty when they are innocent. False information could be given out about the case or they could just be fed up with the case and call them
