Upon hearing I was awarded the Foot Locker Foundation Scholarship, I believe I would end up having a similar experience to receiving my first acceptance letter from a university. Just this fall, I decided to apply to universities in Michigan after my first college visit. To my dad it was quite the shocker, since for years I had been telling him of my grand plans to travel the world fresh out of high school to figure out the meaning of life. Yet to him, college was a pipe dream. My father, who has been a retired army vet since the Iraqi War in 2007, attempted to earn his bachelors degree when I was a toddler but had to drop out to make enough money to support him and I. I was accepted to the program. My jaw dropped as I stood up and walked out of the class. I called my younger brother, who quickly joined me in the hall. We jumped up and down as we hugged each other. I couldn’t control it; I had the largest smile on my face. Unfortunately, coming from a home that requires me to work a part time job to help make ends meet, I have little to nothing to show in savings. Knowing that I can pursue the education I have been dreaming of without the pressures of mounting student loan debt or focusing on work more than school would shock me. For the first time in my life, I would have security in my future. With the financial security this scholarship could provide me, I would be able to dedicate more of my time to working towards becoming the best version of myself. The person in my dreams wakes up and goes to work on creative endeavors, hopefully something that advocates for emotional health, one of my greatest passions.
