In efforts to eliminate hunger in the Austin Community, Hope Church operates a food pantry that provides food and supplies to local residents within the 60651 and 60644 postal zip codes. The Pantry is operated by a friendly volunteer staff who’s there to be a blessing to others! The hope food pantry is a non-profit organization which distributes food to a variety of community agencies which serve the people in need. Last year alone, over 1 million pounds of food was distributed throughout our community. The hope food pantry also host special events to raise money and food for our community. For every dollar raised, the food pantry can provide ten meals to the needy.

Refuge For The Hunger The Agency I chose to volunteer at was The Houston Food Bank which is located off Portwall Street. This Agency was founded in 1982 and is a non-profit organization that distributes food to thousands of low income families all over Houston and to 18 southeast counties and was named the top charity in Texas for financial performance and accountability. Volunteering at the Food Bank was an experience that was amusing and worthwhile. I met many other volunteers and I also got a chance to speak with the Volunteer Service Representatives. The Volunteer Service Representatives helped explain the history and goals of the Agency.
The Guelph Food Bank, is an essential organization in Guelph. The purpose of the food bank is to provide food to the less fortunate. With an unpredictable economy, many people are living paycheque to paycheque, trying to survive on little income. Due to the high costs of rent, not all people are able to purchase groceries and rely on the food bank to provide them with the essentials. The Guelph food bank also serves people who are unemployed as well as people who are living with illnesses. Welfare cheques simply do not provide enough to cover all the expenses that an average person has to deal with. Therefore, the Guelph foodbank’s mission is to not only provide food to the unemployed but to also help people who do not have enough money to purchase food. It not only wants to help people short term, but its goal to help people in the long term by helping them become independent of organizations.
The issue with non-perishable food items is that they are full of unhealthy chemicals and they do not meet basic nutritional standards. People who donate to food banks should consider the healthiness of the food they are giving away. Therefore, food banks should take in financial donations and nothing else. In our learning through service class, our group project was to help a local food bank at Milford. We, Aimee Johnson and Jessie Virnig, along with Amy Wilson and Shawn Klimek, decided to try to give the homeless a little hope. The week before Christmas we went door to door and collected food for the local homeless shelter. We decided to focus on collecting food because around the Christmas season, a lot of emphasis is put on toy drives and people sometimes overlook the fact that the homeless still need to eat. In order to broaden our research, we decided to collect food from more than one group of people. We went to an average middle class neighborhood and to a college dormitory.
