Americans buy and waste food like it’s their job. I am guilty of buying and wasting food as well . For example,we all have a favorite food and have a tendency to want more than our stomachs can hold.How many of us actually go back and eat that food . For example I love tacos especially from my favorite restaurant Nacho mama's. I can't help but order some to go for lunch later in theweek. But my left overs never end up making it to my lunch plate. They end up being thrown to the back of the fridge not to be looked at, until the fridge starts to smell. When cleaning out the fridge one might not think that throwing away a few tacos or a carton of milk is a big deal, but over time food adds up. For examble cars or big factories are one of the most popular escapegotes but a big part of it comes straight from our dinner plates .The amount of food that goes wasted in the United States is on avrage 30-40% .( United Nations Environment Programme, Regional Office of North America) The food that is being wasted is ridiculous it has such bad effect on the environment. So much food ends up in landfills each year. What happens in the landfills is even more tragic. The food waste in landfills break down anaerobically and produces methane a greenhouse gas. Which is horrible for the environment and is a huge contributor to global warming. Some might argue that there are so many more factors contributing to global warming than just landfills.That is true, for example driving a car is bad for the enviroment but it also in most cases are inevitable while minimizing food waste is very possible and anyone can do it . Minimizing food waste has multiple benefits for our world. Other than reducing greenhouse gases, it can bring community together, teach kids how to be responsible and informed about our world.
