The need for the selected 3rd year Nutrition and Dietetics students of Silliman University to raise awareness about food safety to prevent foodborne illnesses

Foodborne illnesses which causes vomiting, stomach ache and etc. Is a common problem but usually taken for granted, especially in places where food safety is not properly practiced by the people. This happens because of the lack of knowledge and improper practice of food safety. According to M&M Technologies (2012) “Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent foodborne illnesses”. According to the World Health Organization (2015), “due to human activity or poor hygiene and sanitation during food production and processing. There have been outbreaks of foodborne illnesses and infections” This is the reason why everyone should practice proper food hygiene. For someone who cooks or owns a shop, it is necessary to have proper food hygiene especially in areas such as the kitchen and dining areas. Not practicing proper food hygiene on establishments will not only lead to more victims of foodborne illnesses but it will also give a bad reputation for your …show more content…

Since improper knowledge about food safety is the main culprit why people often practice improper food safety, it is best to provide different types of lectures to them in order to raise awareness about food safety. According to According to World Health Organization (2015) “Mostly of the foodborne illnesses and diseases can be avoided with the help of proper food handling.”
Based on the results of our surveys, Out of 40 students: 27.5% 3rd year students of Silliman University Nutrition and Dietetics Department always encountered someone without proper knowledge of food safety, 67.5% 3rd year students of Silliman University Nutrition and Dietetics Department sometimes encountered someone without proper knowledge of food safety and only 5% 3rd year students of Silliman University Nutrition and Dietetics Department encountered someone without proper knowledge of food safety.
