Thousand of years before the white settlers came to conquer Australia, many of the Aboriginals used tracking as a life skill. It was frequently used as an everyday tool to explore the landscape of Australia. In a spiritual way, the Aborigines have a close to connection to the nature surrounding them. Through the years and experience of tracking and exploring their environment, the Aborigines had a clearer depiction of the environment they lived on. Ultimately, the native people adapted themselves to live and survive in Australia. As with most works of literature, the title Fences is more than just a title. It could be initially noted that there is only one physical fence being built by the characters onstage, but what are more important are the ideas that are being kept inside and outside of the fences that are being built by Troy and some of the other characters in Fences. The fence building becomes quite figurative, as Troy tries to fence in his own desires and infidelities. Through this act of trying to contain his desires and hypocrisies one might say, Troy finds himself fenced in, caught between his pragmatic and illusory ideals. Dr. Marcia Langton, an anthropologist from Australia of Australian Aborigines descent, spoke at the Berndt’s lecture in 2011. Her article, Anthropology, Politics and the Changing World of Aboriginal Australians, focuses primarily on the works of an anthropologist couple Robert and Catherine Berndt. They had completed many ethnographic studies in various areas around Australia. Langton states that their work has been crucial in order to have a complete understanding of the Australian Aborigines’ society. The indigenous Australian’s society has been thoroughly researched by many social sciences through the decades. Artworks, religion, rituals, economy, politics, and even claims of UFO sightings have been recorded by a multitude of scholars. It could be argued that the Australian Aborigines’ culture has been better documented than any other non-western society. I would like to capture the movement of Australian Aboriginal tradition to a more modern society by incorporating Dr.Langton’s works as well as the work of National Geographic Journalist, Michael Finkel. By researching the society as it is today in the 21st century, I will to analyze how they relate to Australians of European descent.
Students participate in activities that further their understanding of life prior to contact with Europeans, traditional longhouses, economics and spirituality. A second program, Builder, Gatherer, Medicine Walk, takes students on a walk into the woods to identify plants, trees, and flowers still used as medicine, survival food, and for building. Students will learn ways in which traditional Aboriginal knowledge of the land influenced how Aboriginal peoples interacted with the land, and how the environment influences health and community today. Culture is expressed through a variety of different ways, from clothing styles to lifestyles to faithful traditions. It can also have a deep impact on the viewpoints of those around you, whether negatively or positively. No matter how a person goes about their everyday life, they can rise above the expectations of their culture to change the world around them. Culture does not have to be the basis of every thought, word, or deed of a person.
A connection is the relationship in which a person or thing is linked. In the film The Rabbit Proof fence (TRPF) directed by Phil Noyce and the novel The Boy In The Striped Pajamas (TBITSP) written by John Boyne they each show the connections characters have around them. The theme of belonging is communicated through the establishment of forced and natural connections that the characters have with their surroundings. Between the characters in both they shape their identity by having connections with people and places around them to feel a sense of belonging.

Racism is defined as, “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races” (Merriam-Webster). Director Philip Noyce conveys Webster’s definition of racism in his 2002 film, Rabbit-Proof Fence, by examining Aboriginal racism of the 1930s through the eyes of three young girls: Molly, Gracie and Daisy who are forcefully taken from their mothers by the Australian government; and a man, Neville, who believes that giving half-castes a chance to join his “civilized society” is the virtuous thing to do, even if it means stripping them of their family, traditions and culture. The film follows the girls as they escape from the Moore River Native Settlement, an indentured servant training camp for half-castes, and walk 1,200 miles back to their home in Jigalong. Noyce weaves story progression and character development throughout the film to demonstrate the theme of racism and covey the discriminations that occurred to Australia’s stolen generation and Aboriginal people during the 1930s.
Taking a trip outside of the city limits to an Aboriginal park called Wanuskewin was a fulfilling, rewarding and educational experience. As a class volunteers fieldtrip we were welcomed in with open arms to participate in learning and helping with the gardens on the reserved area. These were not your typical backyard gardens, or the one you help your grandma harvest, but a spiritual, tradition, and particular garden. We learned a great deal of the reasoning’s behind the structure of them, the traditional plants grown, and the function regarding the garden. Wanuskewin respects and represents the Indigenous way of life by following the tradition of the circle and how everything is connected and need balance within the land.

The Rabbit-Proof Fence to some was a source of employment, others was a division to keep rabbits from continuing to reproduce but “For the three runaways, the fence was a symbol of love, home, and security” (109). These three runaways were half-caste children, meaning their mothers are Aborigines and their fathers are white. The Australian government believed they were doing the right thing by removing these half-caste children from the Aborigine community, and stripping them from their families. The half-caste were sent to schools that were at comparable levels to a prison, and the purpose behind this was to train and teach the children to either become a house servant typically for females. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was a fictional story for children written by Beatrix Potter. The main character of the story was Peter Rabbit, who had three sisters by the names of Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail. The four bunnies lived with their mother, Mrs. Rabbit, underneath a huge tree in the woods. All the characters displayed the element of anthropomorphic because they are dressed in human clothing and display human characteristics such as walking straight up on their hind legs. The three sisters were wearing a pink to reddish cloak, Peter Rabbit a blue jacket with brown shoes, and the mother a blue chambermaid dress. While Peter Rabbit’s sisters were obedient little bunnies who gathered blackberries, Peter Rabbit was a naughty, disobedient and mischievous young rabbit who gave into temptation rather than to listen to direction.
This is an incredible paragraph extracted from Bora Ring. This poem depicts perfectly of the European invasion of Australia. It shows how the traditions and stories are gone, how the hunting and rituals are gone and ‘lost in an alien tale’, the Europeans being the aliens. This poem also describes that it seemed as if the tradition of Aborigines was ‘breathed sleeping and forgot’. These are powerful words Judith Wright used to show how they Aborigines were quickly invaded and ‘forgotten’. This poem is an excellent example of why Australian students should study her poetry.
