“I know I’m a better fighter, if we fight 10 times I will win 10 times, he’s just not a better fighter than me.” This is just one of the many quotes created by the world renowned athlete known as Floyd Mayweather, an undefeated professional boxer and winner of the Best Fighter ESPY Award six times over. The previous quote was during a SHOWTIME Sports interview where Mayweather was asked about his victory over Manny Pacquiao in May 2015. This case study will based around using a specific psychological theory in order to try and explain why Floyd Mayweather acts the way he does when placed in the media spotlight.
The theory that will be used to try and understand Mayweather’s somewhat arrogant and egotistical behaviour will be Self-Efficacy Theory, a theory formed by Bandura (1977) which states that an individual’s self-efficacy alone is a reliable predictor of behaviour in individuals. Self-efficacy has been defined by Block, Taliaferro, Harris and Kruase (2010) as “…the perception of one’s ability to successfully perform a particular behaviour” (p. 44). There is a large quantity of literature which states Self-Efficacy Theory as being a strong predictor of performance, a study conducted by Feltz and Lirgg (2001) found self-efficacy to be a better predictor of sport …show more content…

For example it has been used to accurately predict performance in sports such as football (Mandell, 1994), tennis (Theodorakis, 1996) and boxing (O’Brien, Mellalieu and Hanton, 2009).
