Kylie, I do agree that case studies are time consuming and take the majority of classroom time. I find the flipped classroom method to be very beneficial but for the middle school and high school setting. Teacher involvement still needs to be high for the case study method to be successful but it still creates promotion of independent learning. I do see that the case study method would not be very beneficial if the students did not feel interested in the subject. It would be similar to our class doing one on a knee replacement surgery rather than pulmonary fibrosis. We would probably be more enthusiastic to do pulmonary fibrosis than a knee replacement surgery. It would be interesting to see a study based on these two types of methods to

The idea of a flipped classroom originally came about in the 1980s when Eric Mazur developed a computer-based instruction to guide students through the lessons outside of his class. He did this because he felt his students needed him most during the class time (Schultz, 2014). Through time the idea of the flipped classroom has continued to be expanded on. In 2000, Lage, Platt, and Treglia published a study titled “Inverting the Classroom: A Gateway to Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment.” This study stated that different learning styles are no longer limited by time constraints or the possible loss of content. According to Lage, Platt, and Treglia, “Inverting the classroom means that events that have traditionally taken place inside the classroom now take place outside the classroom” (Lage, Platt, & Treglia, 2000, p. 32). Lage, Platt, and Treglia wanted to reach students with different learning styles by providing options for the students to use in learning outside of class and to increase their interaction with the students and teacher inside of class

Before I start making the assignment, I have read the case to get and understanding the big picture or the situation in the case study. After that, I analyse the case first by understanding the content in the case study and think creatively the relation between the case and the topic. Then, I read the case again and actively take notes or underline passages. After that, I discussed with my team to identify the key issues in this case, to know the problem that are related with this case study. Flipped learning shifts learning from the group learning space and into the private learning space (Hamdan, McKnight, McKnight and Arfstrom, 2013).
