In Tim O'Brien's book, The Things They Carried, he depicts the morbidity, horror, gruesome memories of war and how those memories affected soldiers during and after the war. The memories that are shared with us throughout the book are presented in manys, in which there are many ways of perceiving it. Through the use of flashbacks, the art of storytelling , and lack of chronology, imagery Tim O'Brien presents that memories after the soldiers’ traumatic war experience have long-lasting psychological effects and are never forgotten. These psychological effects travel with them during their daily lives and are relived everyday.
Tim O'Brien uses imagery to show the perpetuation of the traumatic war memories. After accidentally killing a new soldier, Tim describes the deceased soldier.“He was a slim, dead, almost dainty young man of about twenty. After flashing back to a scene with Mitchell Sander and Norman Bowker, Tim comes back to present tense and says, “The bad stuff never stops happening: it lives in its own dimension, replaying itself over and over.” (31). In this scene Tim is looking back at the deaths of Kiowa and Curt Lemon, which are 2 crucial death scenes in the book. The time that this is said we weren’t aware of how or even if Kiowa and Curt Lemon were going to die so this is more of fastforward than a flashback due to the chronology of the book. You can see that Tim knows that the bad memories are never forgotten and it still affected even though the war has been over for a really long time.
