The Correlation Between First Impression and Interpersonal Communication Among DCLA Students CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study What is the first thing that appears in your mind when you see a stranger whether it is a fellow course mate or colleague? it would be an image of what we perceived that person through subconscious or conscious judgement. This will lead to the formation of intrapersonal comments like “she looks like a neat person”, “he looks like a friendly person”, how could a person look in a certain way? Via the personality traits accompanying physical attributions. Never judge a book by its cover is what we were usually told; it is the inside that matters the most. Perceived traits compromises both positive and negative perceived traits, for example, positive traits include friendly and neat whereas negative traits include snobby and messy. By inviting DCLA students as participants in the research, we can determine the accuracy of these perceived traits. ii) How does first impression through physical appearances affect interpersonal communication? In this research paper, the researcher intends to find out how physical appearances affect interpersonal communication through the use of social judgment theory that could lead to 3 outcomes of interpersonal communication. 1.5 Significance of Study Till this day, physical appearance is always put first whereas personality will be second. It is very hard to get pass the judgement stage during the first encounter with a stranger, unless a person is naturally vibrant and likable, people will have a difficult time to look past the physical appearances that carries negative traits. The importance of this study is to find out the accuracy of physical appearances with negative or positive perceived traits and will it affects communication among people as in will it result in the absence or presence of interpersonal communication. Moreover, this could lead to a bigger picture of humans being generally judgemental and shallow. This study could contribute to society in giving additional findings on this matter and we could also know more on how the human minds work in the aspect of communication, how are we confident and certain towards the perceived traits?
