The fire service revolves around the science of fire behavior. The fire service must understand the science behind fire to successfully attack and defeat the aspects of fire behavior, the products of combustion and prevent loss of life and property, Modern technology both hurts and helps how the fire will behave in a variety of scenarios, previous fire science research and education were based on vertical ventilation and a coordinated fire attack. Other changes noted in construction materials include finished wall coverings once comprised of lath and plaster an almost air-tight finish compared to modern day sheets of drywall that leave seams in the finish and allows for air to travel from room to room during intense fire conditions.
Another advancement in new technology is harnessing suns energy. Solar power compounds the dangers of modern firefighting. The sun provides a great deal of solar energy when captured through solar panels, producing a limitless amount of free energy. Fire tactics are the science behind eliminating the rapid oxidation of a solid that requires oxygen and produces toxic gasses and high heat. We’ve learned thus far if we control the available oxygen a fire needs to grow by controlling the flow path it will not grow and over time it will go out. However, this method does not prevent loss of life or property. Fire tactics allow firefighters to systematically put the fire out, cool internal temperatures in the fire room and ultimately reduce property loss and potentially save tenable lives that may still be inside the structure. Coordinated fire attack and ventilation efforts will produce the best results in with fire suppression efforts.
To better understand when and how it’s appropriate to attack a fire, understanding what the smoke produced by a fire is telling fire suppression crews. Smoke reading is a fundamental tool to understanding fire behavior inside a structure before, during and after efforts for fire suppression are made. For example, inconsistent and puffing black smoke is a tell-tell sign a fire is starved for air.
