Interstellar is a British-American science fiction film directed by Christopher Nolan. It is about a team of astronauts who travel through both space and time in order to find a new inhabitable planet for humanity. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine as the main characters. Since its release on October 26, 2014 in the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, it has been nominated for and won numerous accolades such as an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, a British Academy Film Award for Best Special Film Effects, and a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie to name a few.
There are many possible main ideas for the film Interstellar. It ranges from environmental care and stewardship to the realities of the vastness of the known and unknown universe. However, the true main idea is the adage or epigram of Murphy’s Law, from which the name of one of the main characters, Murphy Cooper, came from. The film describes Murphy’s Law as “Whatever can happen will happen,” and this is an accurate summarization of the film in its entirety. This was discovered to be a wormhole. Wormholes are known to be unnaturally-occurring phenomena and NASA concluded that it was placed there by 5th dimensional beings. Later in the film, Joseph Cooper theorizes that it was placed by future human beings to ensure humanity’s survival. This phenomenon, in the words of one of the film’s characters Doyle, “puts potentially inhabitable worlds right within our reach”. NASA launched the Lazarus missions to scout the inhabitable worlds 28 years before the film takes place and then launches the Endurance to find and rescue the astronauts from the Lazarus missions 10 years
