With more than 5000 years of history, China is one of the world's four ancient civilizations. Its architecture is a form of tangible cultural heritage. It gives each particular place its recognizable features and is the storehouse of human experience. Simultaneously, Chinese architecture is tightly associated with its culture. In this course, numerous of temples, gardens and vernacular houses have been appreciated, in which I realised that the styles of Chinese ancient architecture are varied. They greatly reflect “the harmonious unity of human beings with nature” which is a traditional ancient thought. Meanwhile, unlike cathedrals in western countries, Chinese housings are often composed of small yards. So that, people who live may feel intimate and safe. Particularly, Fengshui, which is one of the typical types of Chinese ancient architecture, has impressed me most as it represents the profound influence of Chinese culture. As we know, Fengshui is literally translated as Wind Water, which aims to achieve the harmonious coexistence between human beings and nature. It is a method of investigating geographical features used in site selection and construction of dwellings, cities, and tombs by means of examining soil and tasting water.
