Oxford Dictionary defines a feminist as someone who “advocates for women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes”. If so, how has this word developed so many negative connotations?

In society, there are millions who privately or openly oppose the idea that there should be equal rights and opportunities for all genders. Others feel that we have already arrived at that goal. On the other hand, more still believe in equal rights movements and efforts to pave the way for all women, regardless of gender identity, race, religion, or social class.

There are an infinite number of reasons why we still need feminism in the world today. Society must continue to advocate for equal rights because of the ever-prominent wage gap between genders. In addition, women who are sexually assaulted are often stigmatized and made to feel ashamed. The world needs feminism because society still tries to teach women how to avoid being raped instead of disciplining others to not view women as objects. In reality, feminism is a broad label for a variety of movements to recognize that women are oppressed and granted less power, influence, material goods, or freedom than men. Overall, it aims to provide women with liberation and equality. Identifying as a feminist is not saying that being a woman is better than being a man, but that they are fundamentally equal although they are currently not treated as such. What feminism does acknowledge is that men (and other advantaged societal groups) have privileges that are denied to many others, and that these advantages can be used for either good or for bad causes.
