Fashion is a practice that individuals use to express identity Fashion is considered as a way to show a person’s ability and identity. According to Mackinney - Valentin, “Fashioning identity is mainly a display of the public self the purpose of which is to communicate social belonging and individual distinction simultaneously. Fashion as a set of symbolic codes, as argued from Simmel (1957) to Susan Kaiser (2002), is suitable for this paradoxical endeavour that relies in part on shifting ideas of beauty, status, social standing, culture, sexuality, and gender.”(Mackinney - Valentin, 2017, p. 5) Identity is considered as various of species such as gender, class, status, ethnicity… etc. In this argument, I agreed with this statement and I …show more content…

According to the website dictionary, the definition of feminism is “the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men” (the definition of feminism, no date). Feminism is a movement and based on women should have the same rights as men either in economic, political and social. It started in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the freedom of industrialism and socialist politics start to coming up women are fighting their rights and opportunities especially the right to vote. In the early twentieth centuries, Elizabeth Cady Stanton has outlined the new idea and politic to feminism and this is where the feminist start (Rampton, 2015). Then in the 1960s, people start to think of the term “feminism” as a negative word (Cooper, 2007). The second movement is all about the equality regardless of sex, women felt degrading that they could only stay at home and work on dull and low paid jobs. Also, the stereotype of beauty that society gave to women, such as bras, fine waist, high heels and makeup. At this stage of movement, not only western and white women were fighting, coloured women and women from other nations start to join and fight for the society sexism (Rampton, 2015). In the mid 90’s, again people start to stand out and claim for the multi-cultural and equality of identity, gender and sexuality.
