Fast food is a term given to food that is very quickly prepared and served. While any meal with low preparation time is considered fast food, the term typically refers to food sold in restaurants or stores with preheated or precooked ingredients, and served to customers in a packaged form as a take-out or take-away. Today, most people choose fast foods either as their breakfast, lunch, or dinner because they are cheap and capable of satisfying their rumbling stomach quickly. Everyone, at least once, has eaten fast food in their life, whether it is McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza, Subway, Taco Bell, Burger King, or many other famous restaurants serving their signature yummy and addicting dishes. Well, the thing is, what makes the food …show more content…
According to a study of 3,000 people, men and women who visit fast food restaurants more than three times a week roughly weigh 4 to 5 kg more than those who visit them less than once per week. This fact is unsurprising, for there are many reasons fast food causes obesity. First, the ingredients of fast foods contain a lot more bad stuff than the good one. Most fast foods contain much, much more fats, carbs, and sugar and less vitamins and minerals than healthier foods. The high amount of fat and sugar exceeding the recommended levels of fat and sugar intake is a true cause of the obesity epidemic and many obesity-related health problems. Aside from being high in saturated and trans fat, sugar, sodium or salt, and simple carbohydrates that are hard to digest, fast foods also contain much more calories than healthy foods. Even a small quantity of fast foods is high in calorie. It is widely known that an excessive number of calorie intake unbalanced by the amount of energy burned will automatically lead to weight gain. This thickens the correlation between routine fast food consumptions and obesity, because most fast foods contain more calories than most people’s suggested daily calorie intake. Second, fast foods
Obesity among Americans has been a growing issue in the United States predominantly over the past decade. Many may argue American’s are obese because of poor food choices, over-eating, genetic disposition, lack of exercise, or the environment which one lives, while others blame it all on fast-food chains and restaurants. Throughout my research I have come to find a lot of facts and statistics about fast food consumption causing obesity. Statistics show that without a doubt the United States is the most obese country in the world.
Eating habits have become a cause of obesity because most people in America decide to take the fast route. Fast food has become so prevalent in the day to day lives of so many families and individuals. The cost and convenience of fast food has led to an increase in consumption, which does not help our cause. According to Carey Polis’ article in The Huffington Post, fast food is about $550 cheaper per year than choosing the healthy option. That means people are more likely to choose a cheeseburger from McDonald’s over fresh fruit and vegetables from the produce section at the grocery store. Along with how cheap it is to get our hands on fast food, the convenience makes it even more difficult to resist. With a fast food restaurant on every corner of every block in town, it makes it much easier for someone to pick up on a meal on their daily commute rather than actually trying to cook something healthy. Choosing fast food is not the most nutritious way to go either. Fast food is filled with sugar, fats, salts, and calories. It is usually low in nutrition and high in what are considered to be “empty” calories. By definition obesity is caused by the excess in...
Is fast food to blame? Fast food restaurants advertise all their ingredients in plain sight. They provide healthy options to their more popular foods such as grilled items, skinless options, low calorie/no calorie beverages, and small portion orders. Most obese Americans are overweight because they are uneducated about the dangers of the fast food. Once they learn about eating healthy, managing overweight issues becomes more elementary. Fast food restaurants should not be the blame of American obesity because there are healthier options, self-discipline, and self responsibility for each individual.
First, looking at high calorie, high fat content, and hidden sugar meals, have you ever took into consideration how fast food meals are prepared or for that matter what is the difference in how you would cook your own meals at home. Fast food restaurants, their meals are high calorie dense foods with added ingredients we would not knowingly truly put into our bodies. For instance, “fast foods from most major chains contain unacceptably high levels of industrially produced trans-fatty acids” (Stender S). The International Journal of Obesity did chemical analyses of 74 samples of fast food menus in 35 countries from 2005-2006, not all fast foods are created equal their findings revealed that “fat content of 41-65g at McDonalds and 42-74g at KFC” (Stender S). Preparing meals at home could cut the fat and sugar content in half. Sugar
The rise and success of the fast food industry has a positive correlation with the rising levels of obesity. Although correlation does not necessarily mean causation, it is hard to believe the fast food industry is not a source of the problem. With its affordable meals and cunning advertisements, the fast food industry appeals to all ages, saving mom and dad money...
One out of every three Americans is obese, and the majority of these obese people in the United States have eaten regularly at fast food restaurants. As the obesity rate increases, the number of fast food restaurants goes up as well. Although it is not certain, many believe that obesity in the United States is correlated to eating fast food. Since the United States has the highest obesity rate out of any country, it is important for Americans to monitor the fast food industry that may be causing obesity. With the pressure to get things done in a timely manner, fast food has become a big necessity.
David Zinczenko makes a compelling argument regarding the issues of the fast food industry causing the life sentence of obesity for children. Perhaps, the arguments provided in his essay could have been well founded in 2003, however over a decade has passed, the industry has changed, and such arguments no longer hold ground. I will argue that in 2015, the responsibility of monitoring the problems which arise from fast food consumption now lies in the hand of the "Eater," not those who dish it out.
In America, parents are always on the run they don’t have time to make their children a homemade meal and when that happens parent get something fast and unhealthy usually at a fast food restaurant. Most Americans that eat at a fast food chain usually don’t make the healthiness decision mostly because they don’t know what is in their food and how many calories are in the food they consume. In the article “Don’t blame the eater” by David Zinczenkon, Zinczenkon talked about how “fast food restaurant don’t have the calories information charts on their food and compare’s it to it to advertisements ads not having labels on the way tobacco ads do”(Zinczenko). Then there is Radley Balko that wrote “What you eat is your business”, Balko is putting
With the world moving faster and faster everyday many people find themselves too busy to cook a healthy meal at home every night and find themselves leaning on fast food for convenience. This convenience leads many to consume fast food from a variety of rather unhealthy restaurant choices multiple days a week. The unhealthy food we see being sold in these restaurants contributes to the unhealthy food Americans are putting in their mouths everyday, leading to poor nutrition, weight gain, and eventually obesity. These fast food restaurants are the “kings of convenience,” and with the busy lives many Americans live today they draw a lot of customers. This essence of convenience is a dangerous temptation that many Americans give in to every day and the unhealthy fast food they consume contributes greatly to their
McDonalds chicken nuggets were my favorite meal as a kid. Theres nothing like getting a free toy and some greasy food. However, I 've gotten older and my palette has changed. As a kid I struggled with obesity and fast food was a major contributor. I now live in an area where fast food is really not an option. On the other hand, some Americans only option is fast food.
Fast food is widely considered a hallmark of American culture, but has spread worldwide. In a society where everyone is always on the go, the fast food industry has persuaded people to give up quality in favor of artificially-enhanced taste and drive thru convenience. Experts often blame fast food for obesity and related health problems. By using advancing kitchen technology to move towards efficient large-scale production rather than increased quality, the fast food industry has created lower quality food, forced lower standards of taste, and has caused adverse health effects in it’s consumers.
Obesity is a big social issue in America. Due to the popularity of fast food and other unhealthy foods, more and more Americans are developing health diseases and disorders. We should be getting the correct daily nutrition amount, but because of our fast paced lifestyles we sometimes do not have enough time. Fast food restaurants make it possible to grab a meal and go. We often do not pay attention to the nutrition amount, but are simply looking for a quick bite to eat that will fulfill our hunger. Fast food is assisting in the increase of obesity in America (“Phrase” par.2).
a. Fast food is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. The term "fast food" refers to precooked foods such as fries or pizza that typically must be used within a few hours, or they become dried out and unpalatable (Ali, Sam).
The main cause of eating fast food is that we are running a fast pace life and we seem to find no time in the day to sit down and prepare a healthy food for ourselves. Therefore, fast food restaurants are continuing to grow their business and we are continuing to put our health at risk as consumers. Thus, in my opinion consuming fast food is not a wise choice for any of us and we should stay away from eating it because it has many drawbacks than the benefits. The changes in lifestyle worldwide from past few decades have shown a great impact on the pattern of food consumption. One of the most common trends in consumption of fast food is eating food outside the home. Family work pattern has also changed and as have family structure,
