Family Honor In The Iliad

276 Words1 Page

Honor plays an important role in family relationships. For example, it was very important in Greek and Trojan families, and it helped bring people together. Book six of the Iliad contains many examples of how honor strengthens relationships between family members. Honor strengthens family relationships in three ways: by upholding the honor of each individual, by upholding family honor, and by respecting each other’s honor. By helping to uphold the honor of each individual in the family, people form stronger relationships with each other. This is first shown in the Iliad when Agamemnon convinces his brother, Menelaos that they should not spare Adrestos, who is a Trojan. Agamemnon wants revenge for his brother, whose wife was stolen from him.
