This paper is the summary analysis of the health assessment on a family based on the family-focused questions of the following eleven health patterns: 1. “Values, health perception 2.Nutrition 3.Sleep/Rest 4.Elimination 5.Activity/Exercise 6.Cognitive 7.Sensory-Perception 8.Self-Perception 9.Role Relationship 10.Sexuality 11.Coping”.In the course of the interview and assessment, the author identified three wellness nursing diagnoses in the family that also form part of this paper. This author interviewed a family called Josephs. The family consists of a father, mother and two children. The father is 46 years old and the mother 44 years of age. The son is 20 and daughter 17. They were too happy to participate in this family health assessment …show more content…
All family members respect each other’s space. The parents instilled good family values in the children at an early stage and they follow it. The parents follow the customs and traditions of the country they came from whereas both the children prefer to follow the American system. Questions regarding sexuality, they did not want to divulge any information, the father simply stated that they do not have any problem in that area. Both children got a proper sex education from schools and catechism classes. The family’s way of coping life situation is through family support, prayers and short vacations. Their open communication and support for each other, help them to reduce stress. The family’s deep rooted religious faith and seeking divine help at the time of troubles ease their stress and tensions. They do take short family vacations that help them to recharge their energies and get rid of tensions. One positive thing noticed about the family is that they do not use any medication for getting sleep or stress. No one in the family uses alcohol or tobacco except the father who smoke a pack of cigarettes and two pegs of whisky on a daily basis. Neither fight nor any assault ever happened in the …show more content…
151). Further to the meeting and discussion with family, the author identified three wellness diagnosis. The first one is on an activity exercise pattern where the entire family needs a regular exercise regimen as the family is very poor in this area and the father is suffering from high blood pressure and high cholesterol and the mother is in borderline obese. The family has agreed to join a neighborhood fitness center for their regular exercise program. The second wellness diagnosis is for both the children whose excessive intake of aerated drinks/soda is not good for their health which, in fact, they are aware of it and now they are prepared to drink water in place of these drinks. The third wellness diagnosis is about the father’s tobacco use, which he agreed to stop and also he agreed to use a glass of red wine to replace his daily intake of two pegs of whisky. “Many doctors agree that something in red wine appears to help your heart. It's possible that antioxidants, such as flavonoids or a substance called resveratrol, have heart-healthy benefits” (Mayo clinic.org,
The Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) is a well-known comprehensive and multidimensional template used by nurses to assess families. CFAM begins by having the nurse visit with the family and gain insight on the family’s functioning at a particular point in time. Interviewing the family allows the nurse to assess and identify potential issues. Furthermore, the CFAM consists of three main assessment categories, known as structural, developmental, and functional. Each of these categories contains several subcategories that allow the nurse to examine all aspects of a family’s functioning. The goal of the CFAM is for the nurse to openly discuss family issues, provide insight to families from an outside perspective and guide them towards their own problem solving tactics. CFAM allows families and nurse to develop a plan of care that is mutually agreed upon. The following paper illustrates a family assessment completed using the CFAM and applies nursing diagnoses and interventions relevant to the family’s current issues (Wright & Leahey, 2013).
Friedman Family Assessment Method is a very helpful tool for assessing a family. It assesses the social, spiritual, physical, and psychological, among other aspects of a family. Analysis of the assessment data using the Friedman model, allow nurses to develop a plan to improve family health and to live a healthy life. The assessment of the Smith’ family was a great experience as it exposes one to different aspects of community health.
The second family that I interviewed was the Lyles family. Both Bro. Scotty, the father, and Mrs. Yolanda, the mother, participated in the interview and three of their children were in the room. Bro. Scotty was born and raised in Alba, Texas on the very same tree farm that he owns and operates today; he is also a deacon at our church. However, Mrs. Yolanda was born and raised in Guatemala. As a child she was raised Catholic, and is part of a large and growing family. She is one of eight children. Their family as well as anybody else in that culture celebrated their daughter’s 15th birthday with a Quinceañera which marked the transition from childhood to young womanhood. This was traditionally the first time the girls would wear make-up, nice
In today’s society, a family can be defined as “a group of individuals who are connected by kinship, affection, dependency, or trust” (Saskatoon Health Region, 2013). With the increasing population and diversity of families in current clinical settings, family-centered care has become an essential component of nursing care. The idea of family-centered care involves collaboration and communication between health care professionals and the family to provide mutual decision making around the patients’ health. Wright & Leahey, 2009). To aid in family-centered care, Wright and Leahey suggest a 15-minute interview as a structured and efficient assessment tool to collect detailed information from a family.
This research paper will explore primarily the impact of African American single-parent households on the children that live in these environments. This is a very important issue and more awareness is needed. Research has provided evidence that single-parent households are one of many risk factors that can negatively affect a child’s educational outcome, emotional health and social behavior. Although not all single-parent family households have disadvantages, the focus of his study is to shed more light on the issues and offer solutions. For example, more policies are needed to reinforce fathers to pay child support. This alone will provide mothers with more money to help them better raise their children.
This paper will outline a needs assessment for families in south Phoenix Arizona that are living in poverty or living as working poor. There appears to be a gap when it comes to the cost of living, mainly the cost of renting or owning a home versus the amount of income a household brings in. The purpose of this paper is to explore articles and gather data from change agents within the community to get a better understanding of what is needed for families to be able to make a living wage and be able to afford a home and all the necessities associated with running a home. The main goal is taking the end results of the needs assessment back to the community leaders and stakeholders to help create a dialogue for change within their community.
The nurse gave the children opportunity to decide whether to send their parent to a skilled facility for rehabilitation or to be discharged home to either one of the children’s homes with a home health agency to follow up with her care. Interdisciplinary care plan meeting between a healthcare staff patient and family members is another example of how patient-centered care(PCC) can be achieved. The patient’s health condition and care should be discussed while still in a health care facility to improve care and to prepare the patient for discharge either to a rehabilitation facility or home with the involvement of the patient and family. The patient's release will be based on the family decision. If the family wants to discharge her home, they will go through health teaching on how to care for the patient at home both in medication administration, nutrition and provision of activities of daily living.
People are slowly starting to realize that wellness and holistic health needs to become a high priority in current health and social care provision as the rate of mortality and illness is increasing dramatically from health problems such as diseases and sickness. When people think of health they automatically assume that if you eat well and exercise regularly you are set for overall health. This is partially true, those aspects set you on the right path but there are a few others to achieve true holistic health. All aspects of wellness include: Physical health Mental/intellectual health Spiritual health Emotional health Social health PHYSICAL HEALTH has many components itself including exercise, nutrition, sleep, sexual health and alcohol and tobacco use. “Physical activity and physical fitness have been linked with health and longevity since ancient times” (Hardman & Stensel, 2003, p.3).
Family can be defined as a group consisting of parents and children living together. The role of the family is to help meet the basic human needs of society (Harris, 2008). The family is the social system and the larger biological context within which medical problems arise and are controlled overtime; therefore knowledge of the family can be significant for understanding the aetiology of the disease and the interventions to manage the disease (Harris, 2008). This essay will discuss about family assessment, the importance of family assessment and its features, the strength and limitations of the family assessment tools and also the role of the nurse to help meet the basic human needs of families. Family assessment is a systematic process of gathering information about a certain family, it aims for a full understanding and a primary view of a family and also it helps to identify the meeds of families with multiple needs (De Bruyn, 2005).
families have struggles, both internal and external, and while this is undoubtedly true, the struggles that
Family nursing is a specialty area that is practiced in all types of different settings. " Family nursing consists of nurses and families working together to ensure success of the family and its members in adapting to responses to health and illness" (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, p.307). Numerous types of family structures exist in our society ranging from a single parent family to a multi-adult household with or without children. Some examples of family life experiences are living in a single parent home due to divorce and participating in a stepfamily relationship. Family health not only involves the individual members, but it also includes the family as a whole.
Family health assessment is a process of getting information from the family about health promotion and disease-prevention activities. Family assessment includes nurse’s perceptions about family constitution, norms, standards, theoretical knowledge, and communication abilities. Marjorie Gordon (1987) proposed eleven functional health patterns as a guide for establishing a comprehensive nursing data base. These functional health patterns (2007) help organize basic family assessment information (Friedman et al., 2003) (Edelman & Mandle, 2010, p. 173-177).Eleven health functions are as follows. Health perception and / or health management pattern, nutritional pattern, elimination pattern, activity/exercise pattern, cognitive/perceptual pattern, sleep/rest pattern, self-perception and self-concept pattern, role/relationship pattern, sexuality/reproductive pattern, coping/stress tolerance pattern, and value/belief...
As explained by Loghmani, Borhani, & Abbaszadeh, (2014), to establish the specific health conditions of a given family, a family health assessment is important to be performed. In addition, this procedure gives the nurse and other health care practitioners the ability to identify the health needs of the family. Therefore, through this process the nurse achieves the opportunity to communicate with the family, examine to detect potential risks for any health issues, get opportunities for health education, and provide health. Moreover, for the nurse to effectively succeed in this assessment, the interview needs to be performed effectively, data piled appropriately, and the nurse completes the examination. Guided by the Gordon’s 11 functional health
There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life. Good family relationships serve as a foundation to interactions with others. Supportive families will help children to thrive. The quality of the family relationship is more important than the size of the family. Making the relationships priority, communication, and providing support for one another is key to developing relationships. Family relationships are what make up our world today; they shape the ways that we see things and the ways that we do things.
Many people don’t realize how the makeup of a family rellys a lot on every individual member of the family, and the status of the mood they are in. Like intricate ecosystems a little disruption can be severe or noticeable at all. The behaviour of one family
