Music according to Merriam Webster dictionary can be defined as “the science and art of ordering tones in succession, combination, and in temporal relationships to produce having unity and continuity. The dictionary made me understand that for music to be meaningful, it must have an agreeable sound. Music depicts a lot of information, ideas, knowledge and importantly feelings. People who make or produce music definitely have a way they feel before they begin to sing or before they make a decision to sing. A popular musician, Bob Marley said, “one good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” The familiarity of a song can determine the way you feel about the song. Garivaldis an organizational psychologist said in one of her articles, The effect of familiar music on the perception of other individuals, “When individuals hear recognizable music, they are likely to perceive another person in the environment as more familiar-through a process of assimilation”(Filia). Let me ask this simple question, does the time frame of a music affects its familiarity? Familiarity on the other hand means you ar carrying everybody along in your music. It means opening yourself for the world to recognize you. Music is a gateway to freedom, music does not only let the singer express himself, music also lets the listener express themselves, it opens a broader knowledge for people, it lets people see the inside of what the music is talking about. Believe me if a further research is done on the music “Hey Ya” we would be shocked to know that the reason why the song became a sudden flop was because they song didn’t give them the opportunity to go beyond just the song, they wanted a better view of the song. They wanted to feel the song as they were either singing along or humming to the song. Our brains do not want to follow a weird pattern, our brains need to follow a pattern that we are used to a pattern that we have heard before and we want to keep hearing, but this behavior doesn’t happened to everyone.
