Muslims carry out about 12.4% of attacks in the US but receive 41.4% of news coverage, but Caucasians who carry out similar attacks only receive about 10% of news coverage. Western media tries to hide the fact terrorist attacks can be caused by Caucasians by not calling them terrorist but instead ¨serial bombers¨ and creating excuses for them. This exaggeration of Muslims creates a false image of them , which can hurt them and their culture. Negative media coverage of Muslims creates the impression in the minds of people around the world that Muslims are the cause of every terrorist attack. The increase of Islamophobia among people around the world is attributed to how Muslims are portrayed in Western media. Negative exaggerated claims made by the media, especially in the wake of terror attacks, cast a shadow on Muslims. Alongside this, there …show more content…

The image is constructed by lexical choices—¨Muslim terrorist¨; by sensationalizing a particular issue—repeatedly pointing out that the group is preparing to destroy mainstream values; and by producing fear- anybody can be a victim of Muslims at any moment. Eventually, these media outlets uphold mainstream ideologies by dehumanizing Muslims and by representing the ¨the West¨ as an imminent victim of Islam and Muslims. (Page 1-2)
The media's purpose of portraying Muslims in a negative light is to keep the public from seeing that Muslims are normal, everyday people. They use Muslim terrorists to represent the entire Muslim community, which causes misunderstandings between Muslims and people who do not know anything about the culture. The media amplifies this by repeating that Muslims are terrorists and are against Western culture, which ruins the image of Muslims.
