The first reason why censorship hurts more than it helps is because in the story, since books are banned it led to big problems that could’ve been prevented. For example, according to the text it says, “Through the aluminium wall he heard a radio voice saying, "War has been declared." The gas was being pumped outside. The men in the beetles were talking and the attendants were talking about the engines, the gas, the money owed.” This shows how after all the things leading up to this point involving books being banned which led to multiple other conflicts like the death of Beatty, war was declared. This supports the theme because since books were censored from the public, it led to conflicts that could have been prevented previously if this law had not been established. Sure, it caused peace for a while, but in the end war was declared which could have been prevented. According to the text it says, “"The captain's dead. He found the audio-capsule, he heard your voice, he was going to trace it. I killed him with the flamethrower.’” This piece of text demonstrates how Montag said he claimed Beatty with the flamethrower. This supports the theme of censorship hurt more than it helps because it demonstrates the fact that since books are banned, it created a conflict with Montag which led up to losing a life. If books were not banned then this event would not have happened. Since Montag also knew Beatty because he was his captain for his job, if books weren’t banned then Montag potentially may not have met Beatty. Also this event would eventually caused even more of a conflict than it created, supporting the theme.
