Due to how easily information can be obtained using the internet, a major change has occurred in which some schools are moving towards a more technological dependant classroom environment with the assumption that it will positively impact the process of learning, due to that it is said that modern children no longer need to develop the skill of reading. However reading books are fundamental to the functioning of today’s society as it enables critical thinking and it is important for social and economic advancement, whereas simply obtaining information from the internet interrupts the development of a child as they are easily accommodated with information that the internet spews out as a result of their search. It is crucial for children to develop the skill of reading books as it enables critical thinking, the development of the mind and language skills for example being able to read instructions on a medicine bottle. It allows children to obtain logical thinking skills that allows them to utilize good judgement. Reading books prompts leaners to engage in their work and confront ideas and opinions. Klaus (2011) states that “Most learners learn best by physically and mentally interacting with what they are studying”. There is a link to physical gestures when one is reading and cognition as the things we can do to print books for better understanding and absorption cannot easily be done using technology. A student who is a good and active reader is most likely to excel in examinations. If most teaching is done using technology, these student’s needs are not met. In order to comprehend information from the internet one still requires the basic skill of reading which is obtained through reading books. Books are an independent source of knowledge and pleasure, it does not require people to rely on conditions such as battery life and internet access to obtain the information they require. Which proves that studying by reading books do not face nearly as much complications as the involvement of technology
