1. Review the basic anatomy of male and female dogs and cats; be sure to note unique features according to species.
For male cats, they have a penis, prostate, scrotum (with paired testes), which all aid in creating sperm and testosterone. Additionally, the most unique feature they have is that on their penis they have little spins and barbs that hold the penis in during ejaculation.

For female cats, they have paired ovaries and a long uterine horn, which allows for these types of mammals to have many young at one time unlike humans.

Male dogs have a prostate, and a sex accessory glad, which is unique to just male dogs. It produces something that goes into their sperm. Additionally, a male dog has a penis that has two parts the penis one and the bulbus.

Female dogs have paired ovaries, oviducts, cervix, and vagina. Moreover, all these structures help in assisting the dog to give birth to a litter of puppies.

They recommend that no earlier than eight weeks in both cats and dogs. However, for dogs the best time is usually around six months. While for cats it is between the fourth and fifth month that this surgery should be performed. Their reasoning behind it stems from a biological and sociological standpoint. One biological reason is that it will get rid of the possible diseases that could happen such as, cancer or other forms of problems that are associated with reproductive organs. Additionally, a societal reason is that there are already so many animals to begin in the world it would help to decrease the animal shelters endless list of homeless
