I have been playing sports my whole life. I started cheerleading when I was in first grade, played softball until fourth grade, and then started playing basketball. I played basketball non-stop from the fourth grade all the way up until senior year of highschool. I played both travel basketball, school basketball, and I was even training during the off season. I have always known when I was not able to play sports anymore, I still wanted to be surrounded by them. I did not care what sport it was. I had switched back and forth between many majors during high school including athletic training, coaching, and physical therapy. Junior year of high school I had a teacher named Mrs. Mercer. This sub discipline will help prepare for my career in many ways. One of the sub disciplines under exercise physiology is sports performance. Exercise Physiologist who work with sports performance are responsible for athlete’s health, wellbeing, and performance. Since I want to be a physical therapist for athletes, this will highly benefit me. They also organize training programs to increase the chance of the athlete returning to play. The goal for physical therapy is to make the client’s pain disappear and to send them off living their life without any discomfort. Exercise physiology will help me have a better understanding of the chemical process of the body so I can treat my patients with full confidence and competence. Sport and exercise psychology involves the study of how psychological factors affect performance and how participating in sport and exercise affects psychological and physical factors. Sport Psychologist help athletes both on and off the playing field. They help the athlete relax and they give them mental rehearsals. This can help me in relation to knowing how to make my patients relax when they are in pain during physical therapy. During my first interview I talked to a family friend who is a physical therapist. One thing that I really took from the interview was all of her accomplishments. Many of the things that she has accomplished were things I didn’t even think of. She put in a lot of work to get where she is now and hearing all that she had done has made me believe that I can also be successful and maybe even accomplish more. I have always had my heart set on either physical therapy or athletic training. Mainly because those were the only professions I have known when it came to kinesiology. Hearing the guest lectures and learning about sports psychology and exercise physiology really opened my mind. I even considered whether physical therapy was really what I wanted to do because sports psychology seemed really interesting to me. I plan to volunteer back home at the North Davidson physical therapy clinic, or if that does not work out, then I will volunteer at a local hospital in the physical therapy department. Senior year of high school I took a medical science class where we had to wear scrubs and everyday we would rotate to different parts of the hospital.
