Trust versus Mistrust is the first stage in Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development. This stage begins at birth and lasts through one year’s old. How does this theory work when it comes to the forming of trust and mistrust? Does it take one time to form a mistrust between child and parent? Does a child trusts its parents the first time the parent comes when the child cries, is it an automatic trust? Trust and mistrust the foundation of how the relationship between parent or guardian with child or a child with a person of authority also seen as a caregiver.

My mother had me at eighteen she went to school and worked so she was only home for a few hours to be with me. The trust was established when I realized that no matter how much she had to work and go to school, she always came home. I am pretty sure that she was there to meet my basic needs in the beginning, but eventually she had to go back to work and school. So, I was mostly with my grandmother however, I trust my mother with whole heartedly. The trust between me and my mom I believe is a part of that unbreakable bond that a parent has with their child. However, my father was around and met my basic needs, but he lost my trust when I was six and he had a baby with another woman and didn't come around to see me and when my mom would take me over to his house he would pretty much ignore me. I still love him and to be honest I will trust him because he is my father and I am sure we will never let any harm happen to me. During this time children are testing their limits. Children who don’t have autonomy and initiative as a child will grow up to be dependent. Around this age my mom told me that I was a busy body, I use to climb on everything and get into all types of products such as, baby powder. There were times when I would be doing something that I was not supposed to and I would get reprimanded for it but, there were also times that my mom would let me have the freewill to climb on furniture so I can learn the consequences that come with it. Like there was this one time when we were at home and I was climbing on some boxes after my mom told me not to but I did it anyways and I fell face first and my tooth went right threw my bottom lip. At the beginning of this paper I mentioned that there are eight stages in the psychosocial development theory starting with trust vs. mistrust. This stage begins at birth to one year of age. This is when I should have formed a trust with my primary caregiver or caregivers. My dad was absent most of this stage, so my mother was my primary caregiver. Since she never taught me good behavior, right from wrong, and was uncaring when I was born, I did not feel safe or secure around her. According to Erik Erickson, in the first year of a child’s life, the main challenge is to establish trust. After birth, an infant must depend completely on others to fulfill their needs. To create a safe environment for the baby, a caregiver must provide things like food, love, and safety. Overall, if the child’s needs are met, the child should develop a positive and trusting attitude toward the world. This security will allow them to build trust with others in the future. For infants that are mistreated or neglected, the world would seem like a scary place. Sadly, they create a barrier and learn to mistrust others. Also, if the child’s needs are not completely fulfilled, the child may develop an insecure attitude (Romero).
There are many different theorists with several different ideas. I have chosen to focus on Erikson’s theory of Trust vs . Mistrust. I have to strongly agree with his ideas because I believe that experiences that a person might go through as an infant can have a huge impact on their life. From birth to 12 months children are in the stage of Trust vs. Mistrust and the strength developed is Hope. Children at this stage need external (trusting the adults will provide for his/her needs) and internal (believing that he/she has the power of changes and to face events). To successful move to the next stage of autonomy the child needs to acquire a special bond, a sense of trust with adults called attachment. Stage one of Erikson’s psychosocial theory is called “Basic Trust versus Basic Mistrust.” This stage ranges from birth to eighteen months of age. According to Erikson, during this stage my parents were the main variable from which I learned to trust. They provided me love, care, and nourishment so that I could learn to trust them. In my particular case, being as though I am adopted, it was probably a little harder at first for me to trust my parents. Even though my parents constantly babysat me before they became my foster parents at three month of age, I can only imagine how much harder it was for them to create a trusting bond with me in the beginning.

Erikson believed this was the most important period in a person’s life. Since a baby depends entirely on his/her parents, the care giving plays an important role in the shaping of this stage (Cherry, 2011). If the child successfully develops trust then the child will feel safe and secure in the world, but the lack can lead to thoughts of an inconsistent and unpredictable world (Cherry, 2011). In the business world, the lack of trust can create a whole new problem. The lack of trust can lead to the “…unseen cost in life and business…” as said by Stephen Covey (2006). Lack of trust creates “…hidden agendas and a guarded communication, which slows the decision-making process” (Covey, 2006). When there isn’t trust in a situation, it hinders productivity, innovation (Covey, 2006).

Children sometimes feel as if parents are mean and overprotective. Children get mad when their parents do not let them date at a certain age, stay out late, and even wear certain clothes. But parents always have a reason for their actions whether the child may like it or not. An example, one’s parent may have dated at a younger age and ends up pregnant. Parents do not want their children to make the same mistakes as they have done. Another example, everyone wants to wear the latest trending clothes. For women the clothes may be too revealing or makes the child look older than what she is. For men, the clothes may be baggy and not professional.
