Transformation leadership: Being an effective leader in nursing

“Effective nursing leadership is a vehicle through which healthcare delivery and consumer demands can be fulfilled (Doody, 2012).” Being an effective leader is such an important part of the work criteria for registered nurses. It takes someone who is able to communicate with their team, confident and passionate in what they do, and most importantly, someone who is caring and will inspire other to do their best every day. This being said, leadership focused on task completion alone is not enough to have positive outcomes (Cummings et al., 2009). In order for transformational leaders in nursing to have positive outcomes, they have to enhance the nurse’s satisfaction, and create a healthy work environment (Cummings et al., 2009). Nurses can do this again by demonstrating the four key behaviours that were discussed above. A very important part of transformational leadership in nursing is being able to create that healthy work environment. One thing that I think I could do would be express my personal opinions on any given situation. I can also take into account the opinions of others. By doing this, I would be demonstrating transformational leadership in the team I am working in. It would build trust and respect between myself and the people working around me. Also, if a tough situation was ever presented to myself or anyone working with me, I could listen to everyone’s opinion on how to handle it. This would encourage everyone to be creative and to think strategically when faced with situations. By listening to my co-workers concerns, opinions, and suggestions on different situations I would be demonstrating effective transformational leadership. Creating a positive work environment is also a very important part of being an effective transformational leader. You have to build that positive environment by making people trust you, and letting them feel comfortable enough with you to express the concerns and new ideas on any situation. One way I could improve my skills in being an effective transformational leader is to look up to other leaders around me. I could see what they have focused importance on in their careers as a nurse and try and focus mine on similar ones.
