Self-Regulation and Learning Theory
Analyze the various processes within each of these three learning theories from a self-regulation perspective and recommend a strategy to use each theory in a professional situation in your specialization of psychology to enhance self-regulated learning.
The processes within each of the three learning theories offer valuable self-regulation strategies for my specialization of psychology. My interest is criminology and I would have to apply all three learning theories in my cases to allow me to solve cases. Learning by observing others is called vicarious learning. The concept of vicarious learning is not one that would be subscribed to by classical behaviorists, individuals are most likely to model behavior observed by others they identify with. Identification with others is a function of the degree to which a person is perceived to be similar to one 's self, in addition to the degree of emotional attachment that is felt toward an individual. In criminology, I could use social cognitive theory as a strategy by using the tenets of social cognitive to help me understand how the criminal operate, and what he or she hopes to gain or accomplish by committing crimes, and the likelihood they will commit the crime again. Social cognitive theory is very important to my specialization because it will allow to me to make a connection between how the criminal became a criminal, why they choose to commit crimes, and the chances of them engaging in criminal acts again. In using behaviorism, I have to remember that all although it’s valuable in my field, not everything is black white, meaning I would have to determine when and if behaviorism should be applied to that situation at that time. In using social cognitive theory, the limitation would be to not use social cognitive as the answer to figuring out the criminal. Social cognitive can definitely be used, but it is important that I further my research in the criminal’s background and fully observe and analyze their behavior patterns in order to draw a more accurate conclusion of the case. In information processing the limitation would be to allow myself to process information in a way that is beneficial and don’t allow my brain to go into information overload. This could cause information to get mixed up and the research or situation becomes inaccurate. The truth is with any theory, the possibility of being wrong is always present, and it is vital to any specialization in psychology to further your research, apply the theories that make sense and carefully observe the situation I order to be accurate in your specialization situation. One theory that stands out as the most effective theory for my situation is social cognitive.
