Peer Pressure: Fiction vs. Nonfiction Peer pressure happens every day in practically every high school around the world. The intimidation of peer pressure can make teens forget morals and be able to discern right from wrong. Some forms of peer pressure have greater effects on teens than others. Peer pressure can affect teens lives forever because the decisions they make can alter their way of living or thinking. An example of peer pressure that altered someone's lives for the better is in ‘A Long Way Gone’. This is not necessarily a negative example of peer pressure because not all peer pressure is bad. This is the part of the novel were Ishmael and his friends discover rap music. ‘One evening a music video that consisted of a bunch of young black fellows talking really fast came on the television. The four of us sat there mesmerized by the song…’ (Beah 18). The discovery of rap music increasingly helped Ishmael throughout his life, not just mentally but once it saved Ishmael and his companions’ life. Not only can it affect them mentally but physically, for some people peer pressure causes anxiety, sweaty palms, nervousness, or confusion. It can lead to worse things later on in life. Bad decisions lead to bad consequences, Roger in ‘Lord of The Flies’ is a good example of this. In the real world today peer pressure may not lead to murder but it can lead to horrible addictions or jail. Not all peer pressure is bad, Ishmael Beah is a great example of this principle.
