How does the mise-en-scene of Inside Out shape the movie? The mise-en-scene shapes Inside Out by revealing characters, shaping the audience's feeling, and revealing the theme. The mise-en-scene shapes the movie by revealing the characters through color coordination and design. Such as the color of the character Joy is golden and is glowing demonstrating she is in fact the main character. This is also demonstrates she is the emotion of joy as it follows the American saying "glowing with joy". This color coordination remains true for the rest of the emotions as Sadness is the color blue following the American slang " the blues" meaning sadness itself. Anger is another example of color revealing characters as red and the flames that come out of Anger are from the American cliché of cartoon character being angry enough to turn red and blow out flames/steam. Fear character design is utilized to reveal his character as he is very slim, has a long "hair" and is modeled by a nerve. This reveals Fear to be fear as his "hair" would stand up when whenever he was a afraid referring to the American idea of having ones body hair stand up when one is afraid. As I mentioned earlier, the clutter in the Gunderson’s home does speak volumes about who they are as people. Well very proud and honest people, they are very flawed and blue collar. This clutter is continued on in the kitchen. The shelf behind the kitchen table is filled with pictures and other nick-nacks. This clutter is eerily reminiscent of the middle class household portrayed by the MacGuff’s in the film Juno. These families both are not going to make sure everything in their home is pristine, but their way of life is really not too uncommon. It really does embody a lot of blue collar America. Another good use of mise en scene in this sequence was the very gray and desolate skyline during the murder investigation. Murder obviously is not a light topic, so the dark atmosphere in the sky very much fits into the theme of this scene. The last thing I’d like to mention about mise en scene and staging takes me back to the opening zoom of this sequence. Along with the visual theatrics zoom, the sudden appearance of nondiegetic music also insinuates this is quite an important scene in the film. If a film was lacking figure expression and movement actors would be nothing more than stick people with blank expressions and very limited movement. In the movie Inside Out, Riley is forced to move to San Francisco from Minnesota. She has to leave her old lifestyle and must adapt to her new lifestyle. Her emotions (Anger, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Joy) get in the way, she has a difficult time adjusting to the new house and school. When Joy and Sadness get lost in long-term memory, Fear, Disgust, and Anger have a difficult time filling Joy’s duties in order to make Riley can be happy. With the conflict of the emotions Riley is unable to feel anything and she decides she wants to go back to Minnesota, where she is happy.
