How does the mise-en-scene of Inside Out shape the movie? The mise-en-scene shapes Inside Out by revealing characters, shaping the audience's feeling, and revealing the theme. The mise-en-scene shapes the movie by revealing the characters through color coordination and design. Such as the color of the character Joy is golden and is glowing demonstrating she is in fact the main character. This is also demonstrates she is the emotion of joy as it follows the American saying "glowing with joy". This color coordination remains true for the rest of the emotions as Sadness is the color blue following the American slang " the blues" meaning sadness itself. Anger is another example of color revealing characters as red and the flames that come out of Anger are from the American cliché of cartoon character being angry enough to turn red and blow out flames/steam. Fear character design is utilized to reveal his character as he is very slim, has a long "hair" and is modeled by a nerve. This reveals Fear to be fear as his "hair" would stand up when whenever he was a afraid referring to the American idea of having ones body hair stand up when one is afraid.
